Tele Bridge Pickup in Jazzmaster Cover
Anyone ever tried this? I see that Curtis Novak is doing something similar with his JMT model- I wanted to try to do my own lazy/poor man's version and just try to seat the tele pup in the jazzy cover. Just wondering whether the dimensions of each (size of brass base plate, pole spacing) would allow it to fit properly or close to it. I was thinking I could even do a "stealth" setup here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No help, but I have to say the JM-T is a fantastic pickup. Just save your money and buy one, it's worth it.

I bet it is too, but I am in love with my Suhr Tele bridge pickup. It's got the traditional tele sound but is a little more powerful and "sweeter" to my ears. Super useful for both lead and rhythm and really responds well to subtleties of attack. I really hope I can get this to work!RumorsOFsurF wrote:No help, but I have to say the JM-T is a fantastic pickup. Just save your money and buy one, it's worth it.

The biggest problem you'll run in to is cavity depth. Jazzmaster pickups are quite thin, but the covers are deep, so you might be okay.

Re: Tele Bridge Pickup in Jazzmaster Cover
I took it upon myself to take pics.
AVRI JM cover, approx. '85 MIJ tele pickup (flush poles).
fits in cover:
a better shot of how it'd fit. (i'd drill mounting hole in the JM cover for the tele pickup)
depending on the tele pickup you use, the JMs cavity depth might not be an issue:
pole spacing is the tricky part (i may not have the cover holes perfectly in line with the tele pole pieces, but you can see that they obviously won't line up):
hope the pics help!

I'm not as concerned with the cosmetics of the holes lining up with the posts as I am with the issue of posts lining up with strings. I guess I'll find out in an hour when my new Jazzmaster arrives!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Tele Bridge Pickup in Jazzmaster Cover
Great! As it turns out, the tele bridge pup sits comfortably in the jazzy pup cover. I just had to remove some foam and there was still enough height for vertical adjustment of the pickup. At first I was concerned with angling the pickup a la tele but found that the magnets lined up quite well under the strings if it just lay dead straight, horizontally. How did it look? A little wonky so I got a sheet of non conductive metallic gift wrapping paper and taped it to the inside of the cover shiny side up. After that it looked fantastic- you could only tell if you were looking for it.supamonkey4x wrote:How did the plan turn out?

That's great to hear cos I'm interested in doing the same with my JM. At first, I was worrying about the pole pieces not lining up but now I know it'll work. I'd install install a custom 62 tele bridge pickup... Can you post a picture of your guitar please?

Re: Tele Bridge Pickup in Jazzmaster Cover
All right, so this is an 8 year thread resurrection, but it's the only thread I've been able to find anywhere on the topic of putting an actual Tele bridge pup in a JM that isn't a Novak JM-T.
Technically, you wouldn't need to put a cover on a Tele pup installed in a JM unless you were concerned about how it looks, right? I'm quite tempted to do just this, JM pup covers be darned, unless someone has a good reason not to do so. Thinking of installing an SD Broadcaster. Thoughts?

And I will be the one to hold Larry Csonka down, kiss him so hard, I'll take Larry Csonka's breath away...

Re: Tele Bridge Pickup in Jazzmaster Cover
One of your fellow OSGers has already got you covered, ba-dum ching!
You could also get a cover with no holes and just drill the screw holes yourself. If you lined up the pickup under the strings and over the cover, you could mark the screw locations easily enough.
Or just do it in the open cavity like you suggested. Any of those options would work.
The main thing is that, if your cavity isn't deep enough, you'll need to shim the neck and jack up the bridge in order to get enough string clearance for the pickup to fit. Easily enough done if you don't want to rout deeper.
