NAD - PRS content
Whilst I search out the dream sound, I wanted to get a utility amp. And picked up this for a steal.
Whilst the drive channel is a bit modern for my taste (Dual Rec on steroids), it’s more than perfect for gigging. The clean channel has a full eq & sounds lush. Effects loop works perfectly.
I couldn’t help but do some FFAF riffs in drop d

Not a lot of love for this amp. I’m digging it. Can’t believe how good it sounds & how loud it is. No brainer vs my old jcm2000 for someone who doesn’t have a car.

I was curious about these, I know it's PRS so it's automatically "not cool" but what kinda vibe does it have? You said Dual Rec-ish on the drive channel, but is it the sterile (in my opinion) Mesa cleans, or something with a bit more character?

Clean is the best part of the amp. And it’s got a proper eq. It’s sharp and bright, more Fender than anything.
The drive channel is very 5150, probably a better comparison as the Mesa has 3 drive channels

Thanks for the closeup pic. It’s less complicated than it looked at first glance.
If you like the sound of both channels that seems pretty ideal.

I love the size of these amps. Now I'm getting older, lazier and more broken physically they appeal more and more. I just wish someone made a Fender BF Bassman in this format.

My buddy SteveJamsEcono is usually pimping these rather than me, but I think this would fit the bill, according to their description: Victory v40 Duchess Compact

I’ve never been a fan of the US modern high gain sound. But 90% of the things I’ve recorded at studios have been variations on mesas & 5150s etc, so it works for what I play. And it actually sounds ok with the gain on 1, and using a TS to boost it so I’ve got 2 gain stages.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 6:33 amIf you like the sound of both channels that seems pretty ideal.
This is a functional amp to gig & carry on the tube. Costs half as much as the Marshall Silver Jubilee 2525 & the clean channel is better. Works for me in that regard.
It’s only a matter of time before Fender release some mini heads. This dude is chunky though. It’s only 10% less deep than your average head. But vs a lot of the other lunchbox heads, it’s all valve baby. And not too heavy.
If only you could get the gig bag over here. The band is still on hiatus though so no rush.

Yeah, I'd actually want about 30-50w (30w would probably be enough, truth be told). If there was a way to legitimately squeeze that into a Tiny Terror sized enclosure I'd love it. I could probably do it myself if I put my mind to it.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 8:31 amThere are a few low watt compact takes on the Bassman like this and this
I’m not sure that either would really capture the heft of the real deal though.
Seems like it would be simple enough to do a single channel black panel Bassman in a lunchbox.

Doesn't align with the Bassman thing but Traynor made a 2xEL34 40w lunchbox head a decadeish ago called the Ironhorse - 4 knobs, 3 switches, ~18 pounds, retailed around $550 CAD. The model (& the whole "small and loud tube head" concept in general) didn't really seem to catch on, which is a shame; I've got one and it hangs with my big amps - most of which are older, heavier Traynors - just fine. I'm genuinely surprised these weren't more popular given the price point & convenience factor.JSett wrote: ↑Fri Mar 31, 2023 9:09 amYeah, I'd actually want about 30-50w (30w would probably be enough, truth be told). All Balls amps & pedals look fantastic. I’m hoping to add to an alternative to this PRS later in the year with something special from Tony…

Both the PRS and the Balls are beautiful amps
