So. Are we allowed to talk about the new songs that they've debuted on tour? Or are we restrained to talking about how guys over 50 should stick to wearing blue jeans with new balance joggers?

I agree! Endsong in particular has this apocalyptic vibe going on, and nothing lasts forever is gorgeous.
It can never be the same has been on repeat at my digs for a while, even though supposedly isn't on the new album.

Very interesting thread took a couple weird turns, glad I got to hear the new music. Does anyone know when the new album is supposed to drop?

Hm, are you new to being a Cure fan? They’ve announced new albums in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2019, 2021 and now I think the current announcement is it’s due this month.

The band is pretty much the same as it has been for 20+ years, except with Reeves Gabriel on guitar instead of Pearl Thompson/Perry Bamonte.
And even Perry is on board for this tour.

Why the hell should they or anyone call it quits? That's like saying a carpenter should give up paid work because his hammer swing isn't what it used to be. Making music and performing is their job. I 1st saw the cure back in 1980 and a few times since over the years. Robert Smith couldn't give a fcuk about what anyone thinks...and rightly so.MKR wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 2:16 pmdoes it matter? I am a huge cure fan, but i haven't listened to anything beyond wild mood swings. To me the cure ended many years ago.
I guess i am showing my age but to me the Cure at their best was when boris williams was in the band. That's the cure i grew up on. It's kind of hard to live up to the standard they set for themselves back then.
Same goes for the like minded Depeche Mode. They truly ended when Alan Wilder left them. Sure they put out some good songs here and there in the years after, but whatever they do now.... it just ain't the real thing anymore. The cure haven't really been the cure for a long time in my opinion.

Still think the solo project route would probably have the most artistic integrity, but you're not wrong.

Re: Is the end here for the Cure?
I agree. They have the typical "band who made it" story. Their crowds consisted of friends at first, then moved on to the "cool" people who were the first to know about them, then the masses when they became popular & that is when the "cool" people left, then they are playing arenas & the late comers are now bringing their kids to the shows to bond with them, then the Cure start playing album themed shows which attracts nostalgists, & now they are back to making new music so their crowds will consist of long time fans/people who have never heard of them but hear the new music & like it/kids who just discovered them/people who heard about them in the 80's & 90's but never really got into them but now can afford to go see them. They have long since earned their place as a great band. I've not really cared for their music since Wish, except the odd track here & there, but I always will listen to new music by them because they mean a lot to me as a musical institution & inspiration.Britfingersisback wrote: ↑Sun Nov 27, 2022 10:48 amWhy the hell should they or anyone call it quits? We are merely moving shadows.

Re: Is the end here for the Cure?
Caught two of their shows & it looks like they're enjoying themselves except Perry. I was on the opposite side of the stage, but anytime I caught sight of him he looked like a zombie. The new songs aren't bad, but nothing memorable about them for me. I'll have to relisten when they're properly released.
Reeves I still really dislike. Seems he listened to the songs enough to pick out the notes/chords & never bothered going back to get it right.

Re: Is the end here for the Cure?
I don't like Reeves' musical choices at all either, but then again, I think Robert's been making questionable choices for decades...
I think Wish was the last time they were really good, and Wild Mood Swings the last time they were at least interesting. It's been pretty relentlessly grim since then, and I'm a huge fan of the earlier material.
I don't know what the situation is with Perry coming back, I'm not sure what's he's adding musically and the band don't even seem to be interacting with him a great deal. I'm sure there are reasons, perhaps private, but it all seems (from the outside) quite strange for a guy who was a key member of the band for around 15 years.
I will say it's pretty amazing they're able to still successfully tour at their level and on their own terms, and I'm sure most people really enjoy the shows and go home happy.

Re: Is the end here for the Cure?
I saw the Cure on Sunday in Glasgow and they were on blistering form. They played a great mix of old favourites, semi-obscurities and 5 new songs. The new songs wouldn't have sounded out of place on Disintegration so you'll get the vibe. The older songs were played with much more verve than you could expect for 40 yr old songs - the 3 from Pornography (Cold, Strange Day and 100 Years) were immense. Catch them live if you can.
