I vaguely remember reading some interview that said that Kurt bought it on a whim for $50 from some Evergreen State College student. They may have played a show there or something and he was always looking for left handed guitars. Don’t quote me on this, thoughJVG wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 8:59 pmSomething that would be fascinating to know (for me, anyway) is the life this guitar had before Kurt. Was it played by some spotty school-kid during high school, then kept under the bed for many years until he decided to offload it in the late 80s? It probably sold for 3/5ths of fuck-all during that era when Kurt picked it up. The stuff I ponder….

I’m up for contributing
here’s a relevant list. If it were 2020 I think this would sail past all of these into untouchable space. Some of the ones sold within the last 10 years look like bargains now, imo. The Dylan electric guitar for $1m?

I'm in. And if this doesn't work, was thinking of giving the winner their choice from some selected parts I've acquired or maybe a simple starbucks gift card?

That story came from his Journals book and it was a great story about getting a vintage 60's LH mustang super cheap, but it wasn't his comp. stang.

There you go. I’m not surprised I recollected this wrong. Don’t want to derail the thread even further, but I thought he only had 2 vintage Mustangs: one 60s Mustang (the ‘69 compstang) and a 70s sunburst. The rest of the Mustangs that he used were Japanese copies or builds, no?FenderBob wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 10:44 amHedonismBot wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:39 pm

http://www.kurtsequipment.com lists 4 vintage mustangs: 1969 LH, 1970s righty, and (2) early 60's LH

Re: Cobain's Mustang up for auction
Can’t remember for sure if it’s the one this thread is based on but yeah, that story is in Journals and it was him and Krist strolling thru Olympia, stopping at a show with some shitty metal band who allegedly were trying to show off their new Kramers, and had the Mustang leaned against an amp, assuming for backup purposes, and when asked dismissed it as a piece of shit for emergencies only thing. So they played that up and bought it for $50 or whatever. Love that story.HedonismBot wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 10:39 pmI vaguely remember reading some interview that said that Kurt bought it on a whim for $50 from some Evergreen State College student.
