ok, so i hate working on hollowbodies as much as anyone but you usually know if you do it right first time, nothing in there is gonna come out for a while..... who's saying "ah yes, i need regular access to the pots to my 60's hollowbody so it's just easier for me to route a hole in the back"

I do not understand. Someone got that bulky assembly of parts in the guitar 50-60 years ago. What goes in, must surely come out?MrFingers wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 5:04 amNo, those are the (dreaded) dust covers that Gibson put around their potmeters in that era. Great in theory, but didn't really work. And those covers are so large that it prevents the potmeters from being fished out of the guitar via the bridge pickup cavity (or F-hole). Hence the "need" to add a cover to the back.
(And yes, I have removed and reinstalled entire wiring assemblies out of a semi-hollowbody previously. More patience is required! )

Yes, nowadays that is possible, but not on those guitars of that era. The F-holes are too narrow to fit the potmeter+cover (that is soldered around it) through them, so you must go via the bridge pickup routing... Which you can't, because that is blocked off by the choke-coil that is waxed in place.andy_tchp wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 5:04 pm

Hey at least he did tape off the area that he routed. That was no hack job.

Why didn’t he make the cover out of the removed wood? I can understand if there was a fault & he felt there was no other way. But that awful black piece of plastic is about as ugly as anything I’ve ever seen
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.
