NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
As some of you know, I recently just sold off my 69 comp blue competition mustang. I really liked it, But there were also some things i didn't love about it.
I found the bigger refret easy to play, but learned (and confirmed) I preferred vintage sized frets, comparing to another vintage mustang at work.
I love LPB and vintage blues of all shades, but couldn't seem to jive with the greened out LPB. I like blue, especially aged, but not when it has gone OTM. It looked really cool, and just like kurdts, but it didn't speak to me personally.. also could be due to the purpleburst mustang I saw when I was just getting into guitars, the first guitar I desperately wanted, but didn't have the money for.
I verbally agreed to sell it, but then I changed my mind, and pulled the plug. I liked the guitar, so why was i selling it?
The more I thought about it, i knew inside it was replaceable, and it wasn't perfect for me.
After more thought and discussion, I let it go, though I was bummed a bit at first. It helped I knew it was exactly what HNB was looking for, and that he was super excited, which made me happy and cool with the deal.
Cruising around the net late last night way too late, i stumbled across another mustang, which was EXACTLY what i've been looking for. I just sold off an amp and the comp mustang, so i had some funds, and decided to buy what i've wanted for a long time.
Without further ado, My new Purpleburst 67/68 Mustang:
It's neat the neck is stamped '67 and then fixed to 8. My two guesses are its either early January they forgot to rotate the "8" for the new year, and caught their mistake, or it's an older stock neck they restamped when putting this together in Jan '68.
Since you can see purple in the neck pocket, it confirms to me the purple was intentionally bursted on,at least on the early ones. Also makes sense why they called it Comp Burgundy.
The fretboard looks gorgeous! Also - i think that might be a vint JM arm, looks pretty long
I'm super excited to have this one arrive, and I'm happy this worked out this way in the end.

Re: NGD: Purpleburst Competition Mustang
A rare bird! Congratulations!!
Funnily enough, the arm was one of the first things that caught my eye. I think you're right. It definitely looks like a JM/Jag one.
I love the fact that you can see the purple in the neck pocket too. I wish you could get that image out to the world & shut up all the idiots who said that purple bursts were a myth & just blue compstangs that had aged strangely.

You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Congrats! That's super cool.
I've never seen one with that much purple before. Mine has a bit of purple on the sides of the guitar at the cutaways, but nothing even close to that.
