I was thinking about this, I can't decide if he sings or not. He certainly had become more singy (technical term) as the years roll by.

A mate of mine and I were once in The Horse Shoe Bar in Glasgow, we been buying records and we were thinking of going to see the Fall but we'd seen them loads and couldn't decide and in walks Mark E Smith. I buy him a pint and he asks if I know anywhere they do Karaoke, my mate said I think they have a machine in the function room and we end up buying him drinks for ages while he tears through some monstrous versions of 'standards'. He also checked out the records we had just bought and seemed to approve of us with us buying lots of electronic stuff 'you don't want to listen to those cunts that copy me'.

He invited us to the gig as his guests but seemed less than pleased that we were non committal but we went.

He fancies himself as a bit of a Sinatra, I can just see the Smith Vegas season.

That's my standard state so I was OK. It helped that he was kinda like a grumpy dad in a sitcom, full in 'character'.

He used to stay near a friend in Edinburgh and didn't like being approached (can't blame him) so we must have got him on a good day.

That's a good way of putting it. I think some songs are more spoken-wordy than others though- some sound more like attempted singing.

The Fall scored a ballet once. Well, an experimental artsy-fartsy dance show. It was called "I am Curious, Orange", and produced by contemporary dance group Michael Clark & Company. It was themed loosely around the 300th anniversary of William of Orange's accession to the English throne.
