vintage Bass VI cases?
hey folks... does anyone here have detailed info about them old (original, of course) Bass VI cases?
i've always noticed that my old thrashed rough-brown tolex case -which i thought was a jazzmaster's- is about 10cm bigger/longer than my 60s jag case.
today i put my VI in it and it fits perfectly!
so... might this be an original VI case? or did the VI fit in jazzer cases?
pics tomorrow.
still, i gotta get it fixed somehow... it's completely smashed on one side ...
Pat.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
I'm pretty sure the VI doesn't fit into a standard jazzmaster/jaguar case. I don't have an original to see, but my VI reissue case is definitely longer than the reissue jazzmaster case and I can confirm that the VI does not fit in the reissue jazzmaster case.
....I'm also curious if there was a separate VI and XII case or if they were the same case.

Bass VI cases the same as Electric XII?
interesting, especially since I'm just about to add a XII to be next to my VI so I can compare both instruments.
Trouble is, there's reissue cases available (or were on the 'bay) but by the time they were freighted to me on the other side of the world, stupidly expensive.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
I can tell you for certain that the original Bass VI will not fit into either a original Fender Jag / Jazzmaster or an Electric XII case, the guitar is simply too long.
The only genuine Fender case that is long enough for a Bass VI is one for the Bass V, but this is even longer.
Both the correct original Fender Bass V & Bass VI cases are unique for these guitars.
So if you have a case that your Bass VI fits into, then it is a genuine Bass VI case.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
here it is:
well looks like i'm a lucky SOB...
cuz it's too big for a jazzmaster:
too small for a jazz bass:
but fits the VI like a glove!!!
but i must see if i can get it repaired, somehow... no matter how ugly it'd look...
seems like there was some severe water and smashing damage.
...but it's got that smell...
so...
early 60s VI case, 60s jag/jazz case, 2x 70s mustang (etc.) case, 60s mustang case

What's the story on the VI? Looks like a bowling ball finish.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
"but it's got that smell"
Now that's interesting .... yes really!!
I have a whole load of 60's Fender cases (over 50 I think) & the one for the Bass VI is the only one out of all these that has "that smell"?
This may just be a simple coincidence of course - & I'm getting awfully anoraky here - but as I have already said, this case is unique to this guitar. So, ... does anybody know if all the 60-mid 60's Fender cases were made by a single manufacturer, or were there serveral involved? I'm now wondering if different glues were used by different suppliers, & if this is the source of "that smell".
My guitar is a 65.
Amusing answers welcome, but I'm just interested to know!!!
PS - I've tried to surpress "that smell" using lavender harvested from the garden & left in the closed case, but this hasn't worked.
PPS - love the quirky finish!

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
Thirty years ago, I bought a Fender Electric XII without a case from Hessy's shop in Liverpool. I cast about for a case for it, but the only generic ones that were big enough were bass cases - and rectangular bass cases are ginormous (and too big to fit in my Austin Mini).
Then I found a Japanese shaped case for a Jazz Bass. The Electric XII fitted inside like a hand in a glove. Years later, I found tyhat the Bass VI I bought in '96 (again, without a case) also fitted into that shaped Jazz Bass case. But I couldn't find another one, so settled for an egg-shaped bass case, less bulky than the rectangular cases...
But in my experience, a Bass VI and an Electric XII will fit interchangeably inside each other's cases...

"a Bass VI and an Electric XII will fit interchangeably inside each other's cases..."
All I can tell you is that this is not correct for a genuine original Fender case I'm afraid, but they may in cases made by others.
An Electric XII will fit in a Bass VI case (with space at the ends) but not vice verse.
These respective guitars have cases specifically designed to fit snugly, & with minimal movement (for obvious reasons) I have three Electric XII's (2x65 + 1x66) & all of these have a case of exactly the same length, with this being different to any other period Fender case designed to accomodate this body shape. The single Bass VI (1965) has a correct Fender case that is different in length, not only to the Electric XII's, but also to any other Fender case (for this body shape) from the same time.
The Bass VI is too long for the Electric XII cases by over 2 inches.
I'll have to haul the cases out to show a vertical pic like the one shown by Pacafeliz, & post some measurements.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
thread revival!
just for your info, the Maverick (basically a XII) is WAY too small for the VI case.
strangely enough, my brother found another VI case in mexico city, and i traded it for one of my mustang cases.
it's a black one from the 60s, and it's AMAZING to have found one for my Squier VI now, too!

I think you mean the Maverick, right? I use an Electric XII case padded at the bottom with a rolled-up t-shirt for my Maverick. As for a Marauder, vintage or reissued, that should fit in a standard Jazzmaster case.Pacafeliz wrote: just for your info, the Marauder (basically a XII) is WAY too small for the VI case.

Re: vintage Bass VI cases?
I do indeed. They're great guitars when you get used to the neck. Plus, as you pointed out previously, the Maverick logo is the bestPacafeliz wrote:right, i meant Maverick, sorry!offkeyericdee wrote:I think you mean the Maverick, right?
