Help--1965 Jazzmaster - input jack does not have my back.
Greetings,
I have a perplexing issue I need assistance with. I have an original 1965 Jazzmaster with a bad input jack( sound cutting out, crackling), I have already troubleshooted the amp and cord, so it is 100 percent the jack. I have some basic soldering skills. I bought a new switch craft mono jack, in an attempt to replace the old jack. The old original jack is connected only with one wire ( white) no black or ground wire. I guess this is normal for this guitar. I connected the new jack the same way as the old, and when I plugged it in, and just got a loud solid noise( similar to putting a finger on the tip of a plugged in cord) with little to no response from pickups. The same sound came from the old jack when I reconnected it. I somehow made the problem worse? So, neither the old or new jack works. What could be wrong? All other wires and pots seem connected and intact. Suggestions on how to fix this issue? thanks-

Probably a dumb question in the absence of a photo, but the white wire is definitely being soldered to the Tip and not the Sleeve of the jack?

AFAIK Jazzmasters have always had a ground wire going from the the tone pot to the input jack. Often (b ut perhaps on later than pre-CBS JMs) there also a ground wire going from the treble bridge thimble to the input jack.
EDIT: I was wrong....!

As @andy_tchp said, that sounds like having the white (signal) wire connected to the sleeve of the jack. Either that or the new jack is touching the shield in the cavity when a cord is plugged in.

So, one of the things I've been loving about shielded Jazzmaster pickguards and Jaguar control plates is that the plate/shielding IS the ground. @Stayabovethe12th1976 may have the one wire wire soldered to the contact for the shaft instead of the tip.DrippyReverbTremolo wrote: ↑Fri Apr 26, 2024 8:29 amAFAIK Jazzmasters have always had a ground wire going from the the tone pot to the input jack. @Stayabovethe12th1976, if you use Imgur.com you can upload your photos there and then get the copy the BBCode Forum share and paste it in here. If you have trouble, lemme know.

Old JMs didn’t use the jack ground tab as all the grounds were made via the pickguard shield and the brass cavity shields. It does mean you need to have a good jack to pickguard shield connection though. Is it possible you got some corrosion/oxidization on the pickguard shield preventing a good ground connection? You may need to check the other ground wires haven’t broken during your new jack install eg the wire running from the cavity shields to the toggle switch ground tab.

Here’s a pic of a 1961 JM, you can see the lack of ground wire on the jack and the ground wire running from the brass cavity shield to the switch ground tab:

The SD wiring diagram for Jazzmasters shows the ground going from the volume pot case to the sleeve of the output jack.
