DIY Relic'ing?
Anyone done it? If so, how?
Nothing insane, just a little wear and some nitro checking is kinda what I'd like to look into doing.

Nitro (spiderweb and other) checking: Freezer method (or use the winter season) - I haven‘t done this myself - but Rexter did it for me (back in the day)
Might be a bit much - but as far I can remember: time of exposure is an important factor. But please read into the topic first as proper wrapping might also be very important.
UV-exposure let‘s some lacquers age (blues turn a bit green, reds fade, etc).
And then there is the wild side (which I‘m personally not a big fan of): drag the body behind you on the street…etc. OR just play the hell out of it. Nitro will wear on its own pretty fast.

I think if I ever saw someone dragging a solid body guitar of the legacy variety behind a car..:I’d find a way to kidnap that guitar

Ooooh there used to be this über escalating thread here, where the guy sat on a JM body and slided down a hill on it... and later set it on fireRavenCrest wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2024 3:38 amI think if I ever saw someone dragging a solid body guitar of the legacy variety behind a car..:I’d find a way to kidnap that guitar

I bought a Jm from MJT. It was "Closet Clean"...faded/dulled (as in "not shiny") but no checking and no dings.
Well...3 years later it is full of checking (which I like a lot), but the finish is so soft that it dings if you touch it wrong (I don't like that too much). Although I am a gentleman, I am not a gentle man with guitars...but, this things dings like bells
I don't mean this to complain...it's in the top 5 or so of my guitars.
Here's what it looked like new:

Now that I have the Nitro 60's Jaguar, the finish is so nice, I really don't know if I should speed up the relic process lol

Re: DIY Relic'ing?
I got a Candy Green MJT body last year that was about as close to "closet clean" as I've seen on their eBay auctions. I actually went in and did some fill-in with marker on some of the tiny dings and chips, because there's a bright coat of white primer underneath, so the little paint dings looked unnatural to me. I don't think I've put any significant new dings in it, but it was easy to tell how fragile the paint was when drilling holes and installing hardware. I tend to agree with you that they could stand to use another coat of paint and/or clearcoat, and I would also say that bright white primer probably shouldn't be used on darker colors. Just my two cents, and I'm otherwise very happy with the purchase.jakeisjake wrote: ↑Tue Jan 16, 2024 9:22 amI bought a Jm from MJT. Also to be clear, I did get exactly what was pictured on eBay and was not misled in any way. I just would have preferred a more robust and unrelic'd finish if given the choice.
