that said, their current live act is outstanding -- i've seen them four times post-MWP, and the show last year was among the best i've ever seen. so yes, i'll be there for at least one of the upcoming Starfish shows in Seattle. probably both, sigh
I felt just the opposite. And we were at the same Triple Door show! It was like Koppes and a mini-Koppes and I didn't enjoy it at all. Marty's sparse effects were such an excellent counterpoint to Pete's mission control. When Kilbey puts down the bass, a shiver runs down my spine, because he's going into gesticulation mode. Tim Powles saved them, but he killed them too. Way too busy a drummer. They will always be one of my top 3 bands of ALL TIME, but I'm pretty much through.
ha! i was talking about the Neptune Theatre show last September -- it dwarfed the Triple Door show, the Showbox show and the Benaroya Hall show combined. they had dropped "Disillusionist" from the setlist by then so no silly theatrics from SK (they'd beaten that song into the ground of late), and replaced fifth-wheel Craig with the guy from Isidore/Remy Zero so that shook things up too. agree regarding IH's "Koppes Lite" stylings -- he's definitely more of a technician and FX geek than MWP -- but things change, and on balance it was a cool set.
but, am wondering how they'll handle "Spark" ....

David Pajo and Brian McMahan (and Britt Walford) of Slint
Beat me to it.
David Wm. Sims, and Duane Denison from The Jesus Lizard too. Pretty much perfect.
EDIT - Hmmm, does bass & guitar count?

Any love for Izzy and Slash?
Nope. Definitely none whatsoever.

In my youth, yes - and they did play well together, but I'm not sure I'd call it interplay as such - there was always a lead/rhythm delineation between what they were playing.
When I think of rock guitar double acts, whether you like the bands music or not, I'd think more of Judas Priest - they made something of the dual guitars and played with and off each other, or in a more mainstream vein, the Eagles - the solo to Hotel California for example is nicely executed, although the rest of the song is a bit bland.

Have Duane Allman/Dicky Betts gotten a mention? Some really inspiring stuff and nobody else sounds quite like them.

How's about J Mascis with.....er.... J Mascis?
Listen to
Pebbles & Weeds loud on headphones & the split guitar tracks are great. I'm not a fan of fret-wankery but I'll make an exception here.
I haven't seen Peter Green & Danny Kirwan mentioned yet.

Good call. They at least played in an intertwined manner, unlike many of the rhythm-lead duos quite a few people have offered up.
Quite a few people have mentioned Lou Reed and <insert name here>; this is the kind of guitar playing I was talking about - one guy who's not just strumming eight to the bar, but is adding melody and movement to the texture, while a second guitarist plays off what he's doing.

I'm not very rock
No need to be. Your much-lauded
The Scarecrow, with its dream-team of Martin Carthy & Richard Thomson qualifies just as well.
Which acoustic rooting reminds me how much I love Mike Heron and Robin Williamson's interplay.
Ducks on a Pond, anyone?
Bonus points to all who posted links with their lists. I've never heard Built To Spill, mentioned by a few, but would have no idea where to begin, as they seem to be quite some way into their career at this point.
IMO Keep it Like a Secret is the best Built to Spill album and the best for guitar interplay for sure. Also “Live” has some amazing interplay and acts as a greatest hits of sorts. It’s a very well recorded live album.

The Go-Bees were great song writers and they released brilliant music but they weren't about great guitar interplay, same could be said for The Triffids and the McComb brothers, David was a great songwriter but their guitar interplay was nothing special.
