Re: recent vinyl acquisitions the thread
Two separate trips to the record store this week:
Defeater - Abandoned
Surfer Blood - Pythons
Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas
Sebastian Grainger & The Mountains - S/T
Against Me! - Searching For A Former Clarity
Weezer - Blue Album
Weezer - Maladroit
Plus I got the new Ergs EP and the Alcoa/Choir Vandals split 7" in the mail.
Apparently there's a gigantic record store over in Rochester that I need to check out?

Re: recent vinyl acquisitions the thread
I was late to the game for this one. I didn't even know it existed until the second single came out (I managed to snag a copy of that one from a seller in Germany, since the pre-order was sold out by the time I heard about it). Anyway, I love VF and really enjoy the 4 songs Patience has released so far. Hopefully, an album is in the works (and a repress of the first single).shadowplay wrote:Anyway I'm just checking in for a FYI since I seem to remember reading many posts on Veronica falls and the singer has a wee solo seven (synthy not indie) out on Night School that's probably a pressing buy since most of the 300 are sold already.

Despite being a reasonably frequent visitor to my girlfriend's home town of Sunderland, this was my first time in the local record shop - Hot Rats. I can only assume that the gf was deliberately keeping me away from it, because it's exactly my kind of record shop! Even though I wasn't intending to buy much, I still came out with a couple of things - Shirley Collins' Lodestar and "A Study into 21st Century Drone Acoustics", which caught my attention because it's beautifully packaged. The guy behind the counter didn't know much about it, but it transpires to be a collection of field recordings of commercial and military drones on one side (much like a record of bird-song), and a composed soundscape on the other side:

Incredible record when I first dropped the needle on Awake Awake/The Split Ash Tree/May Carol/Southover I was genuinely lost for words, really pleased to see someone else on OSG likes it. Ossian Brown, Stephen Thrower of the very magick Cyclobe provide masterful production. I thought about a thread on it but thought it would probably be a waste of time.wingnutkj wrote: Shirley Collins' Lodestar
Definitely going to check out the drone record which looks in the spirit of Stephen P. McGreevy on the field recording side and Chris Watson on the collage side.

Fantastic album. Cian's solo records are equally genius but there's something particularly special being distilled from the ether here in full band context that really shines.mijmog wrote:Cian Nugent & The Cosmos - Born With The Caul

Great record.
What blows me away about how Cian or someone like Dean McPhee* approach the guitar is the amount of attention and care that seems to come with every note, as if each fretting was treated like an orchestral movement.
Some wonderfully intimate footage of Mr. Nugent parting the heavens with a junk shop no name electric guitar: I love seeing people make such brilliant use of gear many of us might otherwise deem sub-par like this, or the swaths of Ta Det Lugnt recorded through a POD, or Kid Congo Powers' Squier strat...it's a sobering grounder for those times when the GearQuest starts running out of hand.
*Cheers to you and shadowplay for the introduction to Dean via the Song of the Day thread, totally engrossing stuff.
Nice find, I'm really into this too.wingnutkj wrote:"A Study into 21st Century Drone Acoustics"
Sometimes buying records based on artwork/packaging is the best way to do it!

That Blackhill Transmitter record is a peach. There's a track on it called Warmth of Heart which is really beautiful and melancholy.
