Hey new guys... there is a search function
Don't mean to sermonize, but for some weird reason (maybe becuase I'm an old-timer here), I'd really like to see some people use the search function before asking about this bridge vs. that bridge, trem setup, replacement pickups, etc. for the 100th time.
99% of this stuff has been dicussed in depth before, sometimes with picture tutorials / sound samples, is easily accessible in stickies at top of sections and if not, there is still a search function.
Last but not least, it's a forum rule. It's implemented for a reason.
I know that with increasing membership comes increased redundancy, but please...

Re: Hey new guys... there is a search function
Sometimes the internal search doesn't really work well; I mean it can just be hard to find stuff. But one trick even I use as someone who's been here for a while is going to Google, entering a search term and then appending site:offsetguitars.com to the end. That gives you only results here. Google's listing is usually a little easier to use than the internal search.

^^^ This is a beautiful workaround for the search function.

Been doing this trick for years. Works like a charm, especially when trying to track down photos from threads I can't remember.

Und up pops a trade in a regular thread... oh my. But I guess there's worse... I just wonder why people don't keep to the rules

Another thumbs up on the Google search trick, works like a charm.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Search algorithms are complicated and really, beyond the scope of free software like phpbb. What they do provide taxes the system pretty heavily and balloons the database but it's occasionally useful for finding very specific things that might otherwise be tricky so we leave it on. Otherwise, using google really is the best way for general searching.

I feel like when I first registered, there was a very clear "you better read the damn rules before you sign up" vibe, and I did read them. Did something change in the last few years?fuzzking wrote:Und up pops a trade in a regular thread... oh my. But I guess there's worse... I just wonder why people don't keep to the rules
Who am I kidding... some folks just can't read.

Yes of course! That is, if some people would even want to bother giving the search function/google a try...Jay wrote:Search algorithms are complicated and really, beyond the scope of free software like phpbb. Hmm... I actually kinda miss the somewhat stricter enforcment (haha) of some basic rules... the forum was much less cluttered (with these virtually identical questions) back then. But the mods have lives outside of OSG (who'd have thoght?) and most of us old ones just don't feel like playing OSG police. Hmmm... I hope this thread/hint could lead to at least a little less redundancy - but I doubt it.countertext wrote:(...)
