The only other James Brown I know is up in Leeds, and I doubtless would’ve known if he owned this beauty!

Re: 1967 Jaguar, Candy Apple Red
Day 3 review/synopsis:
Love it. Maybe it's maturity on my part but the rhythm circuit of this is actually useable. I've always torn them out or taped over them but this one, on the other hand, is warm and sweet but not like a blanket has been thrown over the amp.
Bridge pickup is not as shrill as I remember - still spanky and mix-cutting but not overly harsh like the MIJ ones I've had in the last 10 years, or the old ones I owned in the late 90s. Maybe that's hearing loss too? I have damage to my ears (~5kHz and up) that only gets worse as I get older so maybe that's tamed it Both pickups together is the usual *chefs kiss* of Jaguar tone. Great into a Rat. Great just into the Champ on 10. Great clean.
Neck is super comfortable. Fatter than my No1 MIJ Jazzmaster and a slightly narrower nut. I've noticed I get a lot less hand pain with the shorter scales and fatter necks recently. In my day job my left hand is under a lot of prolonged stretching in the 'outwards' movement, and my right hand is gripping all day (I'm a tattooer so one is stretching skin and one is gripping my machine). This has been causing issues with my playing and I had already had to go down a string gauge - the 24" scale also seems to be an improvement. Happy days.
I'm still not totally enamoured by the red. The wear and checking is beautiful but I do kinda wish it was something like OTM or BMM. But I don't have vintage OTM or BMM money spare right now (well, I do, but can't justify it to myself).
Overall I'm definitely happy with it and feel the compromise of 'only' having to spend 3k for it outweighs the colour annoyance. I'm going to put some stickers on it anyway because Fuck it, it had one before, and that's how I like my guitars.

Side-note: when swapping on some witch hat knobs I was surprised to find the original 1966 CTS pots to have nylon shafts not sure how common this was but I was surprised.

If I was a sticker guy, I'd feel 100% OK with stickering up a guitars like this. The damage has already been done.

I’m not a big fan of CAR, but when CAR finishes check and age into this dark, almost orange shade, I think they’re stunningly beautiful. I like that post-sticker patch too. I wouldn’t opt for it if it was (somehow) a choice, but it’s there now anyway and quite unique. Plus the contrast makes the finish look even more striking.

Yeah, I'd have this hung permanently in a south-facing window for as long as possible to get that copper colour coming through.Sauerkraut wrote: ↑Sat Aug 14, 2021 2:17 amI’m not a big fan of CAR, but when CAR finishes check and age into this dark, almost orange shade, I think they’re stunningly beautiful...
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

I can't tell you not to chase your dreams, but you can't un-route a vintage Jag.

Re: 1967 Jaguar, Candy Apple Red
I knoooooww. This is actually agonising me. I posted the dilemma up on a FB group and there's the predictable multitude of comments about harming the value (of which isn't a concern in my decision) peppered with people saying things along the line of 'fuck it, it's your guitar, shoot the moon' etc.
I've asked a couple of knowledgeable sources (private individuals and shops) what, if I was concerned with loss of value, to expect financially and they said realistically it'd shave off 15-20% if the guitar could be presented as stock from initial viewings and the routing was totally hidden under the guard, and with stock electronics back in place. 20% I can definitely live with. The morality, that's the sticking point.
Maybe the fact I'm torn is a sign. Maybe I should stop being a pussy and just do it. Maybe baby, maybe
Fortunately the pickups are likely a week or two away from arriving so I have time to debate this endlessly internally before I actually have the means to do it.

Would Firebird pickups require routing? I’m guessing probably yes, but they might well sound better than WRHBs. Or not to you. Anyway. Do it.

On one hand routing an original vintage Fender feels kinda wrong but on the other hand that looks fucking awesome and WRHBs are amazing. Tough call!

Yeah, they'd still need some routing for sure. I already have the Firebird Mustang, which I adore, so I'm inclined to go WRHB on this as I've always enjoyed them in my JMsSauerkraut wrote: ↑Sat Sep 18, 2021 1:50 amWould Firebird pickups require routing? The grown-up in me (which is a small part, granted) says no, the ageing punk in me (the rest of me) says yes.

Don't do it.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Re: 1967 Jaguar, Candy Apple Red
Maybe consider routing a repro body instead?
The total cost would be less and doesn’t damage the vintage stuff. We’ve seen Fender offsets ascend to the crazy collectible price tiers over the last couple years and who knows why they’ll do in the future.
