I'm in a similar pickle with my 175. I wish they'd just put strap buttons, and the block it would take to screw into, on these in the same place they do on 335s. Seems like quite a few of them got them in the heel afterwards. That wouldn't decrease the value much I don't think. In some ways it would be a relief to have one already done and I'm sure there are others that feel the same way.
The more I think about it, a decent cavity screw with a retracting brace should work a treat, so long as its unscrewable. The only problem I can think of is that a lot of these fancy screws can't be tampered with (you'd have to tamper with it to get the damn strap button on BEFORE you screw it into the body).
As for the heel screw. At the back {the flat bit) or on the side?? I'm a back man myself.

I'd go in the center of the back and get used to however it hung if I were going to put one in the heel. Anything else would look a bit too weird to me.

I absolutely never ever take my hands off the neck until I put it down.

After playing and gigging for 25 years, I won't gig without some sort of straplock. Dunlops are my preferred after years of experimenting with various options, but another one that never failed me was taking the headstock string retainer from a Fender P-bass and putting a nice long screw through it (and the strap). It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE for that to work its way out of a strap. REALLY - it's never failed and it's cheap.

How does the Grolsch style bottle cap rubbers work? I have literally hundreds of those from homebrewing.
Just shove them on the strap button, on top of the strap. The opening in the rubber is very tight, so it makes a tight fit and keeps the strap in place forever. Well, untill the rubber dries out. I've been using 'em for over ten years and they're the perfect straplocks for me. I can imagine the red color is a turn off for some. But at least you can get them basically for free

The rubber grommet idea from the beer bottles is excellent.
Why not use a twist tie or a thick piece of string that you can tie on?

Cool thanks! Works like a charm. As far as the red color yeah it's hideous. I tried magic marker but that just comes right off. I imagine I can find similar sized rubber washers in black at Home Depot. Also, I have some gaskets that aren't the same used by Grolsch which are a nicer maroon color instead of the almost pink red they use. I searched some homebrew supply stores but they only sell the red ones but you can get a case worth for $5.

I used a bic mark it permanent marker. I think if I sand it some it might stick but that's a lot of work.

If you're trying those red rubber beerbottle things make sure you get a few, I found that the size of the hole in the middle varies quite a lot so some are tighter than others.

That one's just too easy....
Almost got a "that's what she said" response. I guess it sort of did.

"that's what he said" seems more appropriate

They shouldn't unless they are stretched out maybe? They do come in different sizes too 25mm and 32mm. (but the ID is the same)
OT but...I hope you're not drinking Grolsch in Trappist Ale land!
