My '58/'59 JM refin is... Done!
Some of you may remember this guitar of mine:
I had decided not to keep it for a moment... then I changd my mine. Originally, I wanted to do San Marino Blue. But to keep things simple, I decided to go with LP Blue or Ocean Turq. Met.
Then I was sure I'd have it done in aged Olympic White w/ slight relic'ing. But then I decided to do what's best.... I asked my significant other her opinion. I showed her the Dressing Room options and we both decided on a color that looked best on me (well, that is with the original gold pickguard). The winner is... BLACK. No primer will be used to keep it thin. It was a sunburst so it never had any to begin with.
I stripped it last Saturday with Citrus stripper in my basement. Below are some pics. I just dropped it off to a guy for the refin earlier tonight. I can't wait!
He said he could get rid of the stain and do a sunburst. I told him to NOT paint over the pencil date. He of course thought best not to.
I dunno, should I have chosen a burst? would that make the value of the guitar.... better? Sheesh... what do you guys think???

Personally I think although pretty much any colour looks great with a gold guard, the classics are 2TS (3TS with the red faded out), white/blonde and black.
I doubt having a burst done would make any difference to the value of the guitar .. a refin is a refin.
I had my '58 done black .. I think the gold against black looks very classy:

You know how it is... I got cold feet for a second. Thanks for replies! None more Black than Black. I'll put up pics in about 4 weeks. The guy's gonna use Reranch. I can't paint to save my life... well, I don't have the space for it anyway.

Black will look great.
I like the stripped look too. Tell me that doesn't look killer. Raw, Stevie Ray style.
That guitar has some killer sounds/tones in it. I can feel the energy.
You are a lucky, lucky man.

Thanks! I hope it sounds awesome when finished. I wasn't too impressed when I first plugged it in but I think it's because the Bridge p/u needs a rewind. It works but it sounds kind of bad, just sorta too midrangey. The neck is highly figured birdseye maple but that might make it sound not so great too, I don't know. We'll see... Btw, are you the guy who keeps outbidding me on the Pat. Pend parts on ebay? Damn You!linc wrote: Black will look great.

Here's a few quick pics! Still needs a little settling & setting-up...
with the 'ol ratty case
Jeff 'Houndog' Porter is the man who painted this for me. I think he did an amazing job!

Thanks! I'm still on the fence about the gold pickguard. Even though it's original to the guitar, I think i'd be happier with an old 9-hole tortoise shell guard.davelowell wrote: That's cool, man! I really like it!

Re: My '58/'59 JM refin is... Done!
Some other info I forgot to mention is that the pickups have been rewound. When I got the guitar, the neck pickup had been rewound by Fralin. The bridge pickup had it's original windings but had a minor repair. It sounded awful, very midrangey. I was gonna have Fralin rewind it but his turnaround time is long. So I had Curtis Novak do it and he was quick! It sounds awesome! The whole guitar sounds great! I'm keeping it

It came out fantastic!
Who did the paint work for you? Looks absolutely perfect. I think Yannis would approve.
