Got to see Ghostwoman a couple of nights ago, completely out of the blue & at a venue I'd not been to just down the road from where we live. Turned out to be a fantastic little place with a great beer garden that looks to be a skatepark during the day

They were fucking great! A heavier set than I expected but still played my favourite, lighter track towards the end...

I went to see them earlier in the year and they were not great. Feckin eejit guitarist made the fatal mistake of dissing the soundman before the first song and again at several points throughout the set, which you'd expect any performer to know is the dumbest thing you can do.

I kind of felt like shouting "Hey, we've fucking paid for this, you tool!" since he just came across as a total prick from beginning to end.

Oh dear, that's not good.

Next on my list is a split bill - The Black Angels & The Dandy Warhols.

I'm not a huge Dandy Warhols fan but absolutely love The Black Angels & I'm hoping they play last & have a bit of extra wiggle room for an encore/extended set. If they're anything like the last time I saw them in Prague I'll be a happy man.

The Breeders in Chicago was great. Steve Albini's wife introduced them, saying they were his favorite band, which I hadn't heard before. Kim talked about recording with him for a few minutes, and they sold some Albini t-shirts at the merch table, with all proceeds going to his wife. They played Pod & Last Splash and did an encore of the Pixies' Gigantic. Opening band Man on Man was fun and both members played Jazzmasters. Some of my Colorado friends caught the show last night in Denver.


Sunny Day Real Estate was really good. They are touring for the 30th anniversary of their Diary album, but played a bunch more songs after they'd finished playing through the album. They sounded really tight. Opening band Itchy Kitty was good, but screechy vocals are just not for me. They had cool guitars though - the lead guitar player had a parts Jazzmaster with a super sparkly coke bottle green flake finish and a some kind of Strat neck. And the singer had a Flying V with a single bridge HB.


I have tickets for La Luz in a few weeks and will probably go see Los Straitjackets a few weeks after that. Then, Death From Above 1979 is touring for the anniversary of their first album, so I'm going to them in early November.

Man on Man was the best musical surprise of 22’ for me. They opened for dinosaur jr at a tiny place in mass, like 250 peeps total. So good. Lyrically their stuff is raunchy, but I find it relatable, but they just wanna bang other dudes.


Next in my list is Slowdive in Boston, which I am way pumped for, as I skipped it last time. WITH fiddlehead and militarie gun too, which is totes icing on the cake.

The Breeders are incredible and still putting out great records (unlike a certain former band of Kim's IMHO). Was lucky enough to see them at the Joe Walsh Vets Aid extravaganza in Ohio a couple years back.

Got to see a couple of great back to back shows this week. First up was the never-boring Jesus Lizard. Yow and company were in fine form and hadn't lost any of the beautiful chaos of their heyday. 30 seconds into the first song, Liar's brutal opening track Puss, Yow was over the security DMZ and surfing over the crowd. At one point he must have been over 50 feet from the stage, with staff and fan alike furiously trying to keep his mic cable moving. Truly a spectacle not to be missed.


Last night was the Psychedelic Furs, who I'd somehow never managed to see before. This was kind of an odd one because it was supposed to be outdoors, but we've had crazy storms as of late and yesterday there were close to 60mph winds, so they moved it to the indoor portion of the venue. I hadn't been in this place in years, probably since I saw Pavement in '94, so it was fun to check it out again.

The opener was Frankie Rose from NYC, who I'd never heard of, but had a great audiovisual setup with a beautifully crafted synthwave post punk sound. They also featured not one but two Mustangs!


The Furs came out of the gate strong and did not disappoint, playing some new ones and a lot of old ones. Sadly they lost saxophonist Mars Williams last year, but despite that they sounded top notch. The guitarist had a nice looking JM that I hadn't seen before. It had a reverse headstock, one of those custom shop bridges and appeared to be shell pink with the area under the right arm worn down showing sunburst.

Kim has got the magic touch for sure. Kelley is great as well. She has a side project called R. Ring that we were lucky enough to open for a few years back.

Oh man, I so wanted to go to that Darker Waves but it just wasn't in the cards. We were lucky to be as close as we were, and the guys were as into it as if they were at Hollywood Bowl instead of some rinky dink club. They're a really fun group to watch.

I saw The Hives last night, I had a great time, they certainly know how to work a crowd, I've been wanting to see them live since I was 13.

But damn, looks like Dave has been sick for quite a while now and last night in Paris they stopped after 2,5 songs. Let's hope he's feeling better now.

re: Monster Magnet yesterday
Dave really wasn't in good shape. He's gotten REAL fat again and obviously wasn't feeling too well, but still did his best to offer a great rock show. Man's a legend.
Kinda sad how he was repeatedly joking about how old and fat he was...
The musicians were trying to compensate all that. Great rock show, AMAZING song selection.

I was right at the front, in front of the guitar player to Dave's left. Amazing view and all. But one fucker right next to me was filming the entire gig with his stupid phone... so fucking annoying! I was bouncing him a lot on purpose, jumping, dancing, screaming and singing a lot. It'll be fun (...) when I find it online

Enjoyed it SO much even though it was yet another concert i went to alone yeah and on a weekday.
Left me psyched, but kinda worried about Dave's state - physically and mentally.

They were really good, had an awesome evening. One of the more excitable mosh pits I've been in for a while - couldn't not for Touch Me I'm Sick. I'm not super familiar with their whole discography but thought the whole set was great. I took my dad who last saw them back in 1989, and apart from Mud Ride not being on the set they massively surpassed his expectations too.
