Best Sunburst Refinisher?

Post by ryandennis » Mon Feb 26, 2024 8:18 pm

Hey all,
I was exploring Austin last weekend and ran into a beautiful 1962 Jaguar in original sunburst at South Austin Music and was in love :? . I've been throwing around the idea of building a parts jazzmaster for some time and I was wondering who has the nitro pre cbs sunburst down to a science? I'm going for that deeper rich in color kinda orangy yellow tone, I've noticed with sunbursts there are some that are vibrant and some that take on more of a natural look.

Thanks guys!

I had a Jazzmaster refinished by MJT in that sort of sunburst. Their work can be kind of spotty, but I sent them a bunch of reference photos of the look I was hoping for and they matched it really well. I've had 2 bodies refinished by them - first was Inca Silver and they didn't do enough prep work and didn't match the color well, but the sunburst came out nicely.

I had them do a finish for me that ended up having to be sent back twice :derp: , but they finally got it right on the third time and it was absolutely perfect. It did require a lot of push/pull. That is good to know they can pull off a sunburst though!

When I was looking to get my 1966 Mustang refinished I went to Dan Strain. He wasn’t doing anymore refin work at the time but he recommended Joe Riggio.

I had a body sent to him for a sunburst earlier this year. Sent a few photos that were close to what I was looking for, but not exact and rambled on about tweaking this and tweaking that and Dustin was able to pull all of it together into exactly what I was looking for. He was very collaborative and responsive to any questions or ideas I had.

From what I understand he did work with MJT for some time, so he has the experience and skills doing vintage refins, but not the issues that sometimes pop up with MJT.

To get the early 60s look, especially on relics, the yellow needs to be done by staining the body. That’s why so many originals get the yellow coming through when the finish wears off. I’d look for someone who does that.
