Hahahaha, I'm getting that contrarian feeling where I feel like I want to leave it on there even more as more people say how much they hate it...

The pickguard is fantastic, don't let the naysayers bring you down.

I like the pickguard OP. Hope the rest of the guitar is as groovy, old mustangs are good fun.

Re: Hello nineteen seventy-two, too!
I'm strangely into that pickguard. Would I ever go out of my way to buy one or even install it? nope. But, since it's already on there... Now's a great time to learn "Smuggler's Blues" or "The heat is on" (an ohrwurm if there was ever one)
Also, for authentic Miami Vice style, you'll want to trim it back a little so it shows some sockless ankles, just like Crocket and Tubbs.
Congrats to both of you on the 1972 scores.

I’d get the headstock refinished to match the pickguard.

I love it!
Pickguard is weird - but as it‘s already on… leave it - at least for a bit… but if you do: you can only play it with wearing at least one of the following:
a big moustache
a matching Miami style shirt
Or an 80s visor cap…

Re: Hello nineteen seventy-two, too!
My tache is growing...
Gut shots
Polished the frets with steel wool last night and de-rusted all the screws.
Took it apart and the pots appear to be modern CTS. Meh. I spent the afternoon playing it with some new purple Ernie Balls and it sounds epic, especially the neck pickup. I've been wailing over some jazz standards for some reason. Sounds amazing.
The neck is stamped June 72. And it's refin, sadly, albeit what looks like a fairly decent old one. The worst thing is that I can see CAR in the pocket - it was a COMPSTANG!
Still, it plays really nicely and the Miami guard is staying. Props to The Creamery's 69 pickups!

Pay tribute to the original finish with competition stripes in hot pink and cyan. It's the right thing to do.
