For versatility you can't beat a P/J pickup combo.
If you're looking for a JB-style neck on top of that then you should get a Jaguar bass.

I've got several basses but my 2010 Squier VM Jaguar bass (the long scale, passive model with Duncan Designed pickups, B&B and matching headstock) has been my go to for a decade. It's a pretty decent workhorse. I'm not too up to date on present-day Squier Jag basses, but they used to come in both short and long scale models.

Yeah this exact model keeps popping up in my head (next to the white one) - but it‘s just Block Inlays, No Binding - right? There would be one for sale in Vienna… all others are newer ones without a matching headstock.

And now for a left field suggestion: a 60s Yamaha sb-2! They're less versatile and rarer, but they're really cool basses. ....but although prices have been creeping up some decent deals can still be found with Japanese sellers if you're not too particular about details like all original knobs.

A pre reliced version might be within reach

The reissues from a few years back were super cool, too. The SBV-500:

Thank you all for those excellent recommendations!

I will watch the local market and go to some shops in Linz and Vienna - and probably will contact the one selling the black Jaguar Bass (as he is selling one of those cool sounding „Halo“ guitar mics).

Yes it's blocks only, not B&B, not sure why I wrote that :fp:

These were made in Indonesia, same as the VM Jags and JMs, and I've read QC could be a little inconsistent (although mine is really quite good), so definitely try it before buying.

Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but these have non-standard controls ― a concentric volume and tone for each pickup, but with the tone control effectively having 9 positions like a switch rather than a continuous sweep; and they lack a pickup switch. In any case it can be easily* converted to a more traditional master volume + master tone and a 3 position toggle (or a hex switch plate for extra Jaguar points).

* EDIT: well, not so easily since I've just realised you'll have to rout for a toggle or switch plate :fp:

I saw Luna the other night and Britta was playing a pretty rad bass which is made by a company called Serek. I had never heard of them before, but this thing sounded and looked fantastic. Not my photo, though:

The bassist from King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard has been using the same Serek model lately. He used to use a Mustang bass and a Musicmaster Bass.

Bonus question:
Can anyone help me identify what my Fakenbacker is? (to further see what it's worth)

The Trussrod Plate got exchanged for a diy engraved plate that reads Rickenbacker, the Bridge Pickup got swapped out for a Seymour Duncan - other than that it should be stock... yes the other one is a real Rickenbacker but it didn't cut in the mix - so my bassist sold it...

I haven't seen any serial numbers on the headstock or anywhere else.
It's a neck through construction - it has a normal binding (no checkerboard or other fancy stuff). Fretboard could be something like the real thing Padauk - definitely not as dark as the Rosewood of some other copies...

Here’s my Yamaha SA70. I love it, especially when string with flats.

I currently have a Sire V7. Sort of a 70s style Jazz Bass. Definitely does everything I need, and a bit more. Quality is definitely in line with CIJ/MIJ Fenders.

I find a two pickup bass to be a bit more versatile, especially if you are using any sort of pedals. With fuzz, you can go between the thuddyier p bass sound, or a more cutting bridge tone, or a blend of the two.

That said, a P bass is a classic for a reason. It almost always works, for almost anything.
Seconding the recommendation for Sire. I've got a V5 - bassically (typo intentional) a passive version of the V7. I originally went to try the V7, but I found the preamp a bit fiddly for my simplistic tastes and fell in love with the roasted maple neck.

In any case, I tried a bunch of Sires before settling on mine and all were lovely to play. The neck was the big where I really noticed the difference compared to other brands that I tried. They do P style basses (including an attractive 50-esque one) too if that's more what you're looking for.

I'd definitely recommend trying at least a Sire. They're mostly about the same price range as high end Squier, but a lot but in my opinion. Anyway, here's a photo:

They did indeed. ;D

I went for their second night which was their all-covers set. It was pretty great.

Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.
