I'm watching this new build with interest!

Here's a re-paint I did last year to a '67. The body was in rough shape - big crack running the length of the body.
Replaced a few pieces, and used some of PearDream's pick up covers.

oh jeez that is an absolute stunner, how many vintage yams have you refinished? I seem to remember seeing pics of a few different ones hanging on that fence!

I've owned about 30 SG2/3's, but I've only re-finished 3.

Cool thread! Having just bought an SG-2 I am right into this. Since I am fixing mine up, I note we have a few overlapping requirements, so perhaps can help each other out a bit...

Could anyone explain how the neck fits into the body with that overhang at the end of the heel?
Does that go above the pocket onto the main surface of the body or is there a shelf in the heel pocket routed to fit it?
Thanks

I noticed that as well. I did receive all the bits weeks ago, but have been too busy to take pics. There's a strong chance I will be able to help with your tuner problem, and maybe the pickup as well 8). I'm not quite ready to release anything yet though, so just hang tight for a little bit.

Damn, now I have to find two Yamaha vibrato arms. I ended up buying this SG2 after checking my Reverb watch list this morning and noticing the seller had a 15% sale running. So I was able to get it for under $700 including taxes and shipping. Once I get the guitar in hand, I'll need to think through how this affects my plans. I'll likely restore this SG2 to be closer to its original state. I'm not sure yet though. I do know that it will be great to have a real Yamaha on hand as a reference while building my copy.

Also, just putting this out there, but I'll soon have at least one of every original part (except vibrato arms and ??). I am open to making pieces of hardware or the pickups available to reputable folks who would have a serious interest in creating reproductions. I already have 3d printed pickup covers available. It would be awesome to find a winder who can make a close copy of the pickups or a small shop that wants to make vibratos or other bits. Terms would have to be agreeable of course, but hey I'm open to it. Now, I'm too busy to actively pursue it, and I have almost enough of the parts I need. But if you have spare time to bother pickup winders and need new Yamaha pickups, just know that I have a coil that may be available under the right circumstances.

That is quite interesting..
I am currently in the process of making an SG2 pickup bobbin and if that works out well I will start the winding process with AWG 43 ( I think).

When that guitar was first listed, I offered $600, which he turned down. I then offered $700, and he turned it down too. Glad to hear you got it for less than $700!

Well #3393 is here. It was supposed to be delivered on Wednesday, but UPS came hours before the delivery window, during the half hour I was out getting a flu vaccine.

Image

I believe that between the mostly intact original wiring harness that was included, and coils and toggle from the SG7 parts, I'll be able to get all the electronics back to factory specs. I ordered a sheet of the greyest looking mint pickguard material I could find under ~$30 and have another single cover from the SGV pickup.

The listing mentioned a slight backbow, but I suspect they may not have been familiar with the truss rods on these guitars. The frets seem to have plenty of life left though. Our climate here in Colorado is such that pretty much any guitar that I've ever bought has had sprouted frets after a few months of drying out. So I'll expect to have the neck off later to deal with that and will evaluate the truss rod and frets then. I'll replace the high e tuner at that point as well. All I should need then is a pair of knobs and a vibrato arm.

Image

And I guess after that, I won't need to build a vintage style copy. But I'll still have templates and some extra parts, so I guess I'll have to build something else like I talked about on page one. I'm still open to ideas for that. ???

Nice, you'll be done fixing this one up way before I finish my SG-2 project.

I have just removed all the frets on mine and now contemplating what new fretwire to use...

I can't claim to be an expert, but I don't see anything that would make me think it's a refin. It looks every day of 55 years old actually. I could discover something when I go to switch out pickguards though.
