Got mine a couple of days ago. Among the better stock Tele pickups I've heard (although the out of phase thing is weird-- I usually live in the middle position); among the worst factory setups I've played. There's a noticeable ramp in the skunk stripe as well, which is disappointing given the price point. Still pondering whether I'll keep it, which has me pretty bummed.

The our of phase thing has really put me off as I also live in the middle position - shame about the other qc issues obviously leaning on the Mascis mojo to sell them.dropthebeat wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 8:08 amGot mine a couple of days ago. I seen one in real life and was strongly disappointed with how weak the sparkle was. The squier supersonic beside it had a much better sparkle. It played alright. Did not plug it in. I cannot conceive ever paying more than $700-800 for it if I were in the market.

Well, isn't it a relic finish meant to imitate the 30 year-old finish on his guitar?Unicorn Warrior wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:06 pmI seen one in real life and was strongly disappointed with how weak the sparkle was. You could get a blue sparkle Tele body from Warmoth and any Tele neck you like for less than this guitar. I can't imagine paying that much for a sparkle finished MIM that's been intentionally aged. Poly relic jobs just never work. Well, any factory relic, but poly especially.
The artist formerly known as mbene085.

Re: Fender J. Mascis Telecaster
Finish was definitely nitro, hence why the sparkle was likely so weak. I can’t imagine they wanted to attempt something bigger with a mass produced Mexican model. But as far as “aging” was concerned I did not notice it. The neck was aged nicely and had a good work in feel. I’ll give it that. It’s an alright guitar, but you could do much better for your money. Unless you’re a huge Mascis fan, you would be better off elsewhere.mbene085 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 7:13 pmWell, isn't it a relic finish meant to imitate the 30 year-old finish on his guitar?Unicorn Warrior wrote: ↑Fri Aug 13, 2021 3:06 pmI seen one in real life and was strongly disappointed with how weak the sparkle was. Looks cool and the original is one of THE reasons I play a Tele - but the specs are all things I don't want in a Tele: poly finish, top loading bridge, out of phase middle position, roadworn anything, crazy price for a MiM guitar.

Really, an out of phase middle position? I've never consciously heard this feature in a Dino Jr. record.

Re: Fender J. Mascis Telecaster
Took mine back, but to clarify a few things:
Neck is nitro and roadworn. Body is poly and not roadworn.
I did not find the sparkle finish lacking. For context, I have several other blue sparkle guitars (Steve Harris P-bass; Edwards E-LP-108; Reverend Sensei) and would call blue sparkle "my jam". Although the shade and tone differ between them, they're all roughly as sparkly. Also have an orange MIM Super Sonic and it's again pretty similar (but, and this may shock you, orange). None of them are Marty Bell-level glass glitter/metalflake, but they all certainly, uh, announce their presence pretty assertively.
Loved the toploader. After I tweaked the setup, it played well, despite a poorly cut nut from the factory. Neck shape was kinda blah overall (think modern C, not too far off from a nitro finished MIM standard with jumbos in terms of general shape and feel). Would have preferred a fuller shape. And of course, the protruding skunk stripe was a non-starter for me.
Broadly speaking, I usually find upper-end (Classic/Classic Player, Vintera, etc) Mexican Fenders to be the production-level sweet spot in terms of diminishing returns and I've accordingly owned a bunch. I'd have no real issue paying the $1730 CAD - which right now is like a $230 premium over, for example, a Vintera Jag or JM - considering that I respect the artist and love the original model... if I felt the quality was on par with my past experiences in this line. Unfortunately, I didn't. So, back it went.
Pickups were unbelievably dope, though. Higher output but still super clear. Surprisingly low noise as well. They're absolutely winners. I would choose them for a future Tele in a heartbeat.
Now, of course, I'm sitting on a bunch of money that I had budgeted for a new guitar. Hate that feeling. Gibson, if you were planning on releasing a Mac McCaughan signature Marauder Custom, I know a guy who's interested.

God...my Marauder is still firmly in the "one that got away" category.estranged wrote: ↑Tue Aug 17, 2021 8:36 amwouldn't that be cool? Snowball's chance in hell....dropthebeat wrote: ↑Mon Aug 16, 2021 6:39 am

But I definitely bought it because of Mac.
