When did Foxx Tone Machines get so rare?
Has anyone noticed that original and early 2000s reissue Foxx Tone machines have become increasingly rare on sites like Reverb and eBay? I see only clones on the re-sale sites. I used to see these quite often for fairly reasonable prices. Recently? Not so much. Any ideas?

Josh Scott probably buying 'em all up and reselling them at inflated prices. I feel like that's basically what's happened to most pedals at this point.

yeah. at this point the gear market is pretty dry and the only people selling are the speculative types. the ones who are like "this is going to be worth something someday"

1. I don’t think there were that many originals to begin with.
2. The flocked paint jobs flake off eventually.
3. The re-issues didn’t sound as good to me. They just had the look.
4. There were a lot of clones and re-inventions of the circuit when the boutique pedal building era started as it was less well known than a Fuzz Face or Big Muff.
5. Now a lot of clones are out there, and more tweaks and refinements are available.
6. Collectors are hoarding originals because there are so many clones, so an original must be more valuable.
7. Most of the clones sound as good or better. The parts aren’t unobtainable. Unless you really fancy the paint job for a collection, get one of those.

The Dano French Toast is the exact same circuit as the Foxx. Built by the same guy. Cheap as chips.

I wasnt selling or dealing anything, simply noting that I have expertise to consult and the ability to build such a thing if needed.

Agree, but "built by" is a stretch. The original builder now works for Danelectro (president, actually) but the product is built in China.

He owns it, actually. PCBs are PCBs. Why pay an order of magnitude for a clone?Dr Tony Balls wrote: ↑Mon Jul 19, 2021 1:15 pmAgree, but "built by" is a stretch. The original builder now works for Danelectro (president, actually) but the product is built in China.

Re: When did Foxx Tone Machines get so rare?
Hard disagree with that. There are many aspects of a PCB in a pedal design that can differ and affect both reliability and maintainability (i.e will it break and can it be fixed). The addition of things like board-mounted pots, switches, and jacks add mechanical linkages (and thus stress points) to the outside world. They are cheaper to produce by far but much more prone to solder joint breakage. Anyone that's had a jack crap out on their Blues/Hot Rod Deville can attest to this. The French Toast has all of these things. The Danelectro 3699, however, is also the same circuit but with a much better built PCB with off-board wired switches and jacks.
Maintainability can be a factor as well, however the French Toast specifically is a pretty maintainable PCB. There are others in the series (Black Coffee) that use SMD devices which are assembled by robots and very hard for a human to work on.
Not all PCBs are created equal. It doesnt mean they dont work or sound just as good, but the buyer should understand their options. You can get a real Moog or a Behringer Moog clone and both sound the same, but the former will last you a lifetime.
I dunno about an order of magnitude, that'd be like $500, but why pay *more* for a clone? Hopefully they're built better, for one. Also some people like the 'mom'n'pop' interaction with a small business/builder.

Re: When did Foxx Tone Machines get so rare?
I used to work at RIM, and dealt with PCB boards. Some PCBs are so frágile and thin, that if you come near them with the soldering iron, the fucking pads just lift.
So yeah, some PCBs are garbage because they are impossible to rework.

Re: When did Foxx Tone Machines get so rare?
For $35.00US, who cares? I've got a bushel of French Toast pedals in my possession. And none of them have broken. I'm just saying it's a good option for getting the genuine Foxx Tone Machine sound.
