In the UK at least the Cobain Mustang was around £650 originally, so these aren't far off double the price.secretroutines wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 6:51 amThe price isn’t outrageous, you all need to relax. The Cobain Mustang was $999, 10 years ago, so $1250 is about where it should be. You could probably get a good deal on one depending where you go.
Par for the course with Fender and most these days, so its not shocked me. But I can see why it would be a shock to some, especially for a guitar which seems to split opinion more than others.

€1,400 is the equivalent of $1,650 for a MIM Jag stang. Overpriced by at least €400-€500 in my opinion. I presume it will be a poly finished guitar too, similar vintera Strats go for around €900.secretroutines wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 6:51 amThe price isn’t outrageous, you all need to relax. Re: Jag-Stang is back!
Prices have basically doubled since 2010ish. I was buying American Standards brand new for under $1000 then. Now the AmProII (which is the equivalent series in the lineup) is over $2000 CDN.
MIM Standard around 2010 was about $500. Now they're about $1000.

I would imagine the Euro price includes VAT. Also, almost every production Fender is and has been poly with some exceptions for decades.Mervynskidmore wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 8:27 am

Since the last reissue of the Jag-Stang, prices have almost doubled for every guitar. It really shouldn’t shock anyone.DavidG wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 7:49 amIn the UK at least the Cobain Mustang was around £650 originally, so these aren't far off double the price.secretroutines wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 6:51 amThe price isn’t outrageous, you all need to relax. Vintera mustangs still cost £650, so the justification for the jagstang cost doesn't really hold up.secretroutines wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 9:30 amI would imagine the Euro price includes VAT. Alder body this time. I don’t remember if the first round of reissues were basswood or not. Nice that it still has rosewood.
I had an original sonic blue model I ordered through Guitar Center in 1996 for $649 IIRC. It was within $50 of the Japanese “69 Mustang reissue. 10 years later I grabbed a fiesta red reissue for $750 I think it was.

Re: Jag-Stang is back!
I'm with David G on this. I paid £750 for my Cobain Mustang in 2013 - though there were better deals online, so his £650 is in the right ballpark. And that was a huge stretch back then as well. Yes, inflation exists, but that would only turn my £750 then into £850-900 now. Perhaps brexit / weaker pound part of the reason too. But the surprise / disappointment is based on two main things for me at least:
- Disappointed because £1249 (which converts to $1720) is ridiculous for any guitar, unless you're having it custom made for you or something. It's a hell of a lot of money.
- Surprised because Fender's other made in Mexico oddballs, e.g. the Alternate Reality Powercasters were priced in the £600s in 2019/20. When I heard made in Mexico Jag-stang, something close to that is what I was expecting.

Re: Jag-Stang is back!
I get the price problems, especially with the fact that cost of living and commodity prices have gotten way higher in the past decade without a comparable increase in wages/buying power.
HOWEVER
I've played a bit on an OG JS and one of the reissues, and even though the owner had done some great setup work, there was basic craftsmanship stuff that was scruffy -- one had a noticeably filled seam line between the neck and fretboard that had been finished over at the factory, so not something that happened over time; the other had *very* bad fretboard work, with a pretty shit inlay job and horrid frets, to the point where it had to be refretted pretty quick, and chips out of the nut slot (also from the factory).
My Vintera Mustang was basically flawless aside from a dent on the side (which is the only way I could get one for $650), has impeccable craftsmanship (I get fret sprout on it, but also on my near-$2K Kiesel, so it's just the weather where I am), and frankly is as nice a player as the US Fenders from a couple years ago. Yeah, it's expensive, but would y'all rather have a kinda crappy Jagstang for $500 from Squier that needs a bunch of mods to be great, or something MIM that's more expensive (and arguably overpriced -- I don't agree, but I can't fault anyone for feeling that) but is gonna be good to go out of the box? If it's Vintera quality, pretty much the only thing that needs work is gonna be the bridge to dial in the right radius (if they haven't fixed it already)*, and maybe pickups to taste.
*Edit because I'm fucking blind: it's got a Mustang bridge, so worst case is it needs a swap to get better string spacing
who's got two thumbs and is a fucking dumbass? this guy

Yes, absolutely! I'd rather have a Jag-stang that I can afford than look at pictures of a Jag-stang that I can't afford.HarlowTheFish wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 10:43 ambut would y'all rather have a kinda crappy Jagstang for $500 from Squier...?

FWIW the last two Squiers I bought new (Affinity Starcaster and Paranormal Super-Sonic) were quite amazing and didn't require any work out of the box except for a setup.HarlowTheFish wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 10:43 amYeah, it's expensive, but would y'all rather have a kinda crappy Jagstang for $500 from Squier that needs a bunch of mods to be great, or something MIM that's more expensive (and arguably overpriced -- I don't agree, but I can't fault anyone for feeling that) but is gonna be good to go out of the box?

Re: Jag-Stang is back!
I think the simple answer is all mim artist models are priced at c. £1200. In that case, you’d be mad not to buy the Jag over the Jagstang.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

*gasp* How dare you go against the narrative that Japanese craftsmanship is superior to all others!HarlowTheFish wrote: ↑Thu Jul 08, 2021 10:43 amI get the price problems, especially with the fact that cost of living and commodity prices have gotten way higher in the past decade without a comparable increase in wages/buying power.

Talking of price rises: Last night I realised that the MIM Fender Telecaster neck I bought 2 years ago for £168 now sells for £380 from the same shop. Doesn't surprise me that prices of complete guitars have gone up so much as well.
