Marauder Content - pickguard, plates, switches pre-assembly

Post by Deed_Poll » Fri Apr 23, 2021 11:33 am

Hello all!

I've been working hard getting all the Marauder plates and switches together and fine-tuning the pickguard toolpaths.

It's getting harder to find decent pearloid these days, but this Hosco material bucks the trend. It's a bit more expensive, but has a good amount of the pearlescent / swirl, which is sorely lacking in cheaper pearloid (that tends to have a lot more opaque white in there).

The body is made from Idigbo, which is a popular substitute for white korina / limba, and is actually sold as limba sometimes. It's medium lightweight.

The neck is just a stand-in 24-3/4" scale Warmoth conversion neck, hence the squared off fretboard end and overhang, but the neck heel and pocket are Stratocaster / JM shaped (my usual test neck is a Squier JM neck which is currently affixed to another prototype).

I thought I'd take some pictures as a kind of mock-up now that all the pieces are together for the first time.

Cheers :)

Tasty and very nice craftmanship!
That's why I like this place so much, so much talented builders that post here!
Looking forward to the rest of the build.

Any idea about the colour you want to dress the Marauder in?
I guess a solid colour that goes well with the nice perloid pickguard...

I personally find metallics and flakes are a great match for pearloid, solid non-metallics jar with me slightly next to pearl because the pearloid has more "depth" than the finish!

Looking at this one, my gut is saying Shoreline Gold would be a great finish choice! After that, perhaps the lighter metallics like Inca Silver, Ice Blue Metallic, or Firemist Silver. Then there's the "classic" dark Lake Placid Blue that the famous prototype was finished in :)

Awesome! Is this potentially going to a model in you catalogue?

I have been thinking I might hold back three or four sets for myself and get on this Musikraft brilliance... :-/ ;)

This is too damn cool. I'm chomping at the big to get my own made. Such a cool instrument. Love what you're doing with the switches as well!

Love the Marauder - a cool piece of history that really seems to be getting its due in the last couple of years. This one sounds like it'll turn out great. Interested to see how the weight ends up with the korina-adjacent wood.
