What if no one applied the dragon? What if the dragon showed up on its own?

That would make it even more special/valuable when it gets listed for sale...Unicorn Warrior wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 6:55 pmWhat if no one applied the dragon? What if the dragon showed up on its own?

Tried the googles for Foo Dog Mascot, foo dog team logo, etc. got nothing close. I have also been looking at tattoo's art, line art, etc, nothing....

If the line that forms the lion is below the surface of the original finish (looks like it based on your graphite rubbing), it could have been done with a scribe that is commonly used in printmaking (dry point, etching and some other techniques), and perhaps clear coated to soften the relief. If is was done manually, and that's very possible, looks like a design executed by a skilled hand.

My money is on a print of some sort being left in the case underneath the guitar. But we'll never know. It's a super cool story though!bessieboporbach wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 11:58 amI think you're hoping to find out that this guitar is more exotic than it is. It's just a nice, high-end production model that one of the owners did something to. I still think the simplest explanation is the most reasonable, i.e. that somebody leaned the guitar against something (maybe an ornately carved desk or chair) and it made a shallow impression in the nitro.

If it’s an accidental imprint, how is it positioned so perfectly, and the imprint so perfectly rendered?

I don't know about perfectly positioned. It just looks randomly placed in the thickest and most expansive part of the back. I.e. exactly the part you'd rest against something.

If it were accidental, if would have had to sit once on whatever caused the impression otherwise, we would have multiple impressions.
I say done by someone after purchasing.
Op,
Can you show a pic of the back without the graphite? Angled so the lion can be seen.

I know you want this to be a thing and I appreciate that. But I'm really inclined to trust Ron Thorn here:

Nothing to solve the mysterious lion, but my 62 AVRI Jag has a "JAGUAR" imprint between the bridge and the tremolo. It seems as if the imprint is of the same type as that of the thread creator. You can only see it slightly in the finish when you move the guitar in the light. I assume that this is a characteristic to easily differentiate itself from an original 62. Again, nothing to contribute to the solution but the thread reminded me of it.
very difficult to photograph, just the "R"
anyhow, the lion story is fascinating, hope we find out where the lion came from.

Re: '65 AV Jazzmaster with mysterious Chinese Lion.
My thought exactly. It looks indeed that simple
There are a few options here. A Fender employee made a drawing on a piece of paper with a pencil and used the unfinished, but already sandend and prepped body as drawing board/table. As the impression left on the wood is quiet minimal, it's not visible and easely overlooked. It's like some kind of grafitti, so to speak, but most likely unintional. Then the body got it's thin Oly white Nitro finish and this is the result.
Or as HNB wrote it was done after the body was already finished.
I had a body with a marking as well, although not as artistic as this one, just a "Z" or a triangle that was used to match the blocks of alder. It showed after up after the pore filling and the white primer I used. So I had to fill it/level it out.
Alder is not that dense a wood as for instance maple. I have been working/shaping, etc.. Alder bodies.
For instance scratches from sandpaper apear under a finish, which are in fact slight depressions in the wood. Which shouws up once the finish is done and buffed... Depending on the finish used it will or won't show. But as Nitro is a quiet thin finish, this most likely explains it.

A piece of paper unless fixed to the body, would have caused a different or distorted impression.

Like HIPPA for guitars?bessieboporbach wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 11:58 am
If the guitar was shipped directly from Fender to a customer, it would be illegal to disclose that information to you. It's also probably illegal for GC to tell you who traded it in without a warrant.

It's just basic privacy rights customers have. I wouldn't want nut cases asking me shit all the time, about random guitars I've owned before.tatotateman wrote: ↑Tue Apr 27, 2021 11:29 amLike HIPPA for guitars?bessieboporbach wrote: ↑Sun Apr 25, 2021 11:58 am

Yet, I sometimes do get fucked up questions through Reverb.
