I did some things.
Welp, it happened: after several years of feeling completely satisfied with all my gear, I went on a bit of a pedal bender last night. This is exceptionally uncommon for me because I'm not really a "pedal guy" – I'm much more likely to blow money on yet another guitar than to spend anything on pedals or amps. Anyway, in one fell swoop last night I bought a Janglebox, a Basic Audio Zippy fuzz, and a big-box MXR flanger. Pretty excited!

good to see you back. if i remember rightly, you were always a "keep it simple" guy. i think those 3 are all pretty simple so could work for you

Nice! I've been on a similar pedal binge for the last month or two.

Ha! Yes, I've been mostly lurking for YEARS now. Been posting a little bit here and there lately.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 08, 2021 11:19 ampacemaker

Definitely a fan of simple stuff – four knobs or less, ideally. I'm super excited to fool around with these!

That MXR flanger is killer. I'm sure that'll be a great pickup. The other two I don't have experience with but seems like they're based on some classic gear with modern upgrades, so probably some solid stuff too. I think most people who are "simple" gear people tend to really like using compressors I use so much gain already that they don't work for me, but if you have a simple/basic setup, it's amazing what just some light compression can do!

I'm absolutely in love with the flanger after a few days with it. I immediately started playing era-appropriate Cure songs; even ran the bass through it to fool around with "The Holy Hour!"ElephantDNA wrote: ↑Fri Apr 09, 2021 10:15 amThat MXR flanger is killer. The Zippy is pretty great, too. The octave-up effect is more subtle than expected, but it seems to become more apparent in certain settings or when I'm on the neck pickup. I have a Merkin, a Peppermint Fuzz, and an Eric Johnson Fuzz Face, and the Zippy doesn't really seem to overlap any of those. It seems really versatile; I'm excited about getting to know it better.
The Janglebox went back. I just... don't understand what to do with a compressor. I tried a few others over the years and didn't get along with those either. I figured if the Janglebox didn't do it, I'll leave them alone for at least a while. Or until I pick up a 360-12...

I love compression on bass, but I don’t know what to do with it on guitar either.

It's for like country guys that want sustain but not gain. To be honest I've never used one on guitar, but it has its place. Just not in the type of music I play (waaay to much distortion going on).marqueemoon wrote: ↑Tue Apr 20, 2021 12:27 pmI love compression on bass, but I don’t know what to do with it on guitar either.

Re: I did some things.
Yeah, I like even my "clean tone" to have a little breakup so maybe it's just not something I can appreciate. I did notice increased sustain, but it wasn't dramatic enough to warrant keeping the pedal. I'd been curious about the Janglebox in particular for a long time, so I'm glad I gave it a try.
Zippy continues to impress; I really need to look around and see if anyone has posted settings they like for it. I'd also like to A/B it against some of my other fuzzes, particularly the Peppermint Fuzz, which has been a favorite of mine for some time now.

YES!!! EXACTLY!!! Man... I feel... validated?marqueemoon wrote: ↑Wed Apr 21, 2021 5:24 pmMe too. I rely a lot on how the amp reacts to my pick attack, and with the compressor evening out the peaks it just made everything too consistent.

Re: I did some things.
Id say IME when i have used compression it does that instead of the amp doing that (aside from funk tones or something)- IF you want a very clean loud and sustaining tone without dirt, which was the instance i used it, playing loud clean leads alonside a dense fuzz rhythm.
