Bridge options for 12'' radius?

Post by adamrobertt » Sun Mar 14, 2021 2:32 pm

I have a custom made offset style guitar (with traditional vibrato and bridge setup) that currently has a stock, old school style offset bridge on it with threaded saddles. I would like to upgrade the bridge, but it has a 12'' radius, and so my typical go-to (the American Professional bridge) won't work, and Staytrem doesn't make their 12'' model anymore (I emailed them to ask, and they said they're too busy to do a custom one off right now).

Aside from Mastery, what else is out there? Anything?

I forget who makes it off of the top of my head, but there is a TOM style roller bridge that has a 12" radius. Stewmac has them I think

Actually, come to think of it, I have one I bought for a project that ended up not working out. PM me if you'd like to discuss it further

I put a Schaller STM roller bridge in my jaguar and never looked back.

It allows to set the string spacing as well and it's available in many finishes.
It's sturdy, works great and looks good on offsets.
Easy to find as well on Schaller's own website, Thomann's, StewMac and so on.

008-1239-049 is the official fender modified mustang bridge. on a few of their guitars inc the kurt cobain mustang.
If you just want to be rid of threaded saddles.

Interesting. How did you deal with the thimbles? I'd like to avoid doweling and redrilling if possible...

I don't like the individual height screws either. I like my bridges to have as few screws as possible.

It might work to just file down the slots in the 4 inner saddles of the American Professional...
Without music, life would be a mistake.

You could also just shim under the outer saddles of an AmPro bridge for something that's easy enough to undo. A couple bits of aluminum from a can or something will work pretty well (I've seen this done a lot to get flatter radii on Floyds, for example).

I know you don't like screws, but just to add to the options there's this new one from EY - adjustable gold saddles like the silver ones on the Warmoth modified Mustang bridge (beefier at 8mm diameter than the 7mm ones on Fender's 008-1239-049). Width is listed as 10.5mm, which would mean E-E spacing could be as low as 52.5mm, although that depends mostly on the drilled spacing of the intonation screw holes on the bridge plate (and with a few exceptions [Marr/Am Pro/Squier CV] those are often drilled closer to 56mm).

In sheer honestly, I don't know what the luthier did back then but I'd guess he has plugged & redrilled.

I once filed a mustang bridge for radius. Because they are barrels you get a huge slot length, so its then tricky to shape nicely, to angle it or put the curve of the saddle back. Its mm away! However i file out every low E a small amount to fit the string usually and thats fine, but is more like widening the slot.

Shimming would be better for that route. Cyanoacrylate some sheet of brass to the bottom?

Suppose if you dont like height screws you could also superglue them to the radius, if its about dislike for them sinking, but they do have less stability still i reckon. Heh my dislike is they sometimes take a nick out of my knuckle when thrashing but i like the adjustment possibility.

Or perhaps if you have spare parts start off with some of the 2nd or 5th barrels as the 3rd-4th or some arrangement of saddles. I dont know how much difference there is with 12" between saddles but if its nearly double 7.25" then maybe that gets close with some minor filing without going so far in.

Göldo makes a conversion bushing.

I have not tried it, but if confronted with your problem I would try this with an ABM roller bridge.

And the to-be-released Descendant is 12 or 9.5, not even 7.25
