Dinosaur Jr. - I Ran Away
Haven't seen mention of this on the board. New single out a little while, with an official video posted 3 days ago.
I dig it. It has that classic "reunion-era Dino meets J's solo albums" thing going on.

Good tune. I seem to see that Lou Barlow is still in the band, which makes me happy for some reason. I really like the guy's instrument playing.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Re: Dinosaur Jr. - I Ran Away
Frankly, I enjoy everything Lou does even more than J. His playing, his singing, his songwriting, his lyrics, his way of interacting with fans and bandmates...his musical output has been more varied and more frequent than J's over the years and I'm grateful for that.
I signed up on day one for his Artist Enabler Club over at JNR, which has been really cool as a lifelong fan. It's a mishmash of formats and covers everything from new songs to unreleased ones to demos and live recordings. The first shipment came with a small handwritten thank-you note, which isn't the type of thing I normally get excited about, but it was pretty cool in the context of what he's written about the project. It really meant something to him.

Me like, but J is back to his "sleepy" vocals on this one.

Yeah, that's a great way of putting it. That's the sound I associate with his recent solo albums. They are definitely on the more dreamy/sleepy side, and it's fine to hear him doing it on a Dino song, but it definitely blurs the lines a bit. This pretty much sounds like Murph and Lou sat in on a session for a follow-up to Elastic Days/Tied to a Star/Several Shades of Why.budda12ax7 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 07, 2021 9:00 pmMe like, but J is back to his "sleepy" vocals on this one.

I'm torn. On one hand I kinda like that they sound as they always did. I mean, take the Ramones... But this time I felt that if I wanted familiar and safe, I would have called mom...

Interestingly, it's "Produced by J Mascis & Kurt Vile".

Re: Dinosaur Jr. - I Ran Away
Nice to see a lot of people feel the same as me about this sounding like his recent solo work. I found Lou's songs on the last dino jr album to be the better ones on there. I'd hope Lou/Murph don't get relegated to just being J's backing band under the Dino Jr name, but this is only one song. There have been some good songs on each reunion album, but I feel like Farm is strongest one overall.

The album leaked a month ago or so — some serious jams on there. I can’t really hear a lot of KV on there personally outside of a few leads that sound less improvised.

Maybe you haven't seen this video, he kind of seems to play the guitar like he plays his bass. He just does it. I mean, I can play guitar and all, but Lou Barlow makes it look as effortless as when I butter toast. It looks like his instrument playing is simply an extension of himself.mbene085 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 06, 2021 7:27 pmFrankly, I enjoy everything Lou does even more than J. I hadn't seen that one, but it's pretty good and pretty classic Lou. I've seen him live several times and he's always the best part of his bands when he's not playing solo. He's remarkably nearly always on pitch, even when playing pretty energetically, in stark contrast to J or Jay.Larry Mal wrote: ↑Sat Mar 20, 2021 6:38 pmMaybe you haven't seen this video, he kind of seems to play the guitar like he plays his bass. Maybe 3-ish years ago, I was lucky enough to catch both Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh live within a few months of each other. I actually felt pretty bad for Lou, there were people shouting J's name at the Dino show and saying things about/to him the whole show, but I never heard Lou's name once. Then, at the Sebadoh show, people were doing the same thing to Jay, which seemed crazy to me because I always thought of Sebadoh as being "Lou plus Jay" rather than the other way around. All their greatest songs were written and sung by Lou as the lead, at least in my opinion.
I was front row for both shows, and wore a Dino shirt to the first one but wore my "Brace the Wave" shirt (from one of his recent solo albums) to the second, so while I'm not a heckler, hopefully he felt there were people there who weren't just there for Jay. I was surprised that didnt have any vocal fans at either show, frankly.
Lou's also pretty entertaining on ukulele, using a baritone uke for most of his solo stuff over the years. Here's the more-or-less title track of that 2015 album, Wave, and the title track of the 2016 EP, Apocalypse Fetish.
He's definitely got a more diverse catalogue than his bandmates. Between Dinosaur and Sebadoh records and solo ukulele albums, he did stuff like this as Folk Implosion and this with the Missingmen.
