15" speakers are really underrated for guitar in general. It's funny how much they're still "hidden gems" after all these years.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Tue Dec 08, 2020 8:30 pmYea, they sound great with all the Offsets. They give them a big tone. They're always hard to find, or the price is crazy.
I love the clean tone on them, and they sound particularly good with Jazzmasters and Jaguars.

I think there were. I might be suggestible there, though. Honestly, I'd love to hear one, the way 15s can tame transients would be a great feature on a Twin.Veitchy wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:13 pmWeren't there Twin Reverbs with factory 15in JBLs?mackerelmint wrote: ↑Wed Dec 09, 2020 8:10 pm15" speakers are really underrated for guitar in general. Re: What are y'all's dream amps?
Yes and no. There were Vibrosonic Reberbs through the '70s and a handful as late as 1981, many with factory fitted JBL D-130F (early) or Gauss (later) speakers. Same chassis, power output and cabinet dimensions as a Twin Reverb, the only functional difference being the 8 Ohm output transformer (Twins were 4 Ohm) and single 15" speaker.
I still have one of these amps (though not for much longer), and very much miss the original JBL D-130F sound. I blew it up, reconed it, blew it up again, and then decided to try other offerings (Jensen Neo). Though there was never an official power handling figure published, they surely weren't designed to cope behind an 85 watt (clean rated power) amp at full tilt. Would probably survive just fine behind a Bandmaster or Vibrolux/Vibroverb.
I believe there was also a later 'special' reissue Twin with a single 15" driver, probably an Eminence speaker.

Re: What are y'all's dream amps?
Loud.
Way too loud!
Master volume always on 10, 'vibrato' input, volume just a bit over 4 to 4.5. Several distortion pedals smashing the input even further (Rat, EHX Metal Muff, Crowther HotCake) and squalling digital delay wall of noise stuff. Basically until it runs out of clean headroom and finally starts compressing. Too loud.
The poor D-130F never stood a chance, and the all original 1973 moving assembly did incredibly well to survive the first 7-8 years of my ownership without so much as generating a voice coil rub. Instead the VC actually melted one night leading to the terrible symptom of: No sound. Infinity ohms on the DMM, and that was that. The 'closest possible recreation of the original JBL parts' recone kit I put into it only lasted a few weeks before a buzz, then a rattle, then a permanent pairing of both of those undesirable sounds
Drummer is still an animal so the volume gets right up there even in the new band. I'll be moving it along soon as it's difficult to load into/out of the car and carry up/down stairs even when I'm at 100%. When I have neck/shoulder issues (like right now) it exacerbates them. The Jensen Neo speaker weights nothing (~2kg IIRC) which both helps and hinders things. It's lighter, but it also means nearly the entire weight of the amp is within the top 10cm of the cabinet, which makes laying the thing down in a car boot much harder than it needs to be.
I'm aiming to solve this with a BF Showman head and custom made 1x15" cabinet to split the weight and make things a bit more manageable.

I had a vibrosonic reverb until like 2 years ago. Sounded cool with guitar and occasionally bass. I can confirm 4.5 is LOUD

Re: What are y'all's dream amps?
Dream amp? hmmmm.....
I used to stare endlessly at that awful Electric Amp website. I would LOVE to stand in front of a full stack with one of those and blast myself to death. Super $$$ obviously, and the builder was....complicated to deal with, to put it lightly.
Would love to try some of the Reeves stuff. Some of the other boutique stuff always appealed to me too - Swart, Tone King, Naylor.... Too much $ though. I'm all-in on old Traynor and Ampeg, plus have a '78 Vibrolux Reverb, Sunn Model T red knob, and '81 Twin Reverb that I found at very good prices over the years.
A GV-22 Ampeg would be a fun one to try, but not really a 'dream' amp for me since I already have several Ampegs that are similar.
A Fender Vibro King is up there because of the built-in 3-knob reverb. I used to be wayyyyy into surf stuff, but somehow have never once plugged into an outboard Fender reverb tank.

Re: What are y'all's dream amps?
I find the Vibro King such an interesting prospect. They're meant to be an absolute tank, but in terms of it's feature set its pretty unique amongst fenders. I reckon the Bruce Zinky designed Fenders were the last truly innovative and unique Fender circuits, at least as far as all-tube circuits go.Grumbletron wrote: ↑Fri Dec 11, 2020 10:01 amA Fender Vibro King is up there because of the built-in 3-knob reverb.
