I may get some hate for this, but my first inspiration was Ace Frehley of Kiss. I had my parents buy me the Alive! 2 album when I was about 8 or 9, I think it was my first album. I listened to that album to death, and I loved Ace's playing. Kiss is pretty meh, as you get older and learn about the other music of the time, but Ace did put some cool into their music. Kiss was also my first concert, the Dynasty tour, I think.

Ace's solo album is still a classic.

From there, there are too many to mention, but it was Ace that fed the passion of playing guitar at a pretty young age, even though I didn't get a guitar (bass) until I was 12. Maybe that time helped prime the passion, who knows?
That's a good one. You're right that musically they're kinda meh (at least for me), but the image alone would be hard to top for someone wanting to play/make music. I always think of this:

Yeah, that pic is from right around the time I got into them. It was all a big draw for a kid my age -the makeup, the costumes, the theatrics, the huge stage show. The music wasn't that bad to me as a kid, but his playing really lit it up. A lot of the music itself wasn't really bad, it was the lyrics that were usually cheesy and cringe-worthy (Paul and Gene). I pretty much lost interest after their Dynasty album, and Ace and Peter left soon after that anyway.

I finally went to see Ace again a few years ago at the House of Blues in New Orleans, and brought my younger brother with me, who kind of missed out on that whole scene back in the day. He was really impressed with Ace's playing, especially at his age. After that show, he finally understood why I was always such a big Ace fan.

*edit: There's a Dunkin Donuts commercial that he made a few years ago, with the makeup and the outfit, where he kicks on some kind of fireworks spinner on his headstock and then jams a riff at a board meeting. I really liked it. "I got your P&L statement..."

I'm sure it's still on youtube.

My dad is a huge status quo fan so that was in early rotation in the house. Also he played and I showed interest in music but hated learning stuff and wanted to write songs. One day I heard the Ramones or something and I thought I could do it. There was also a really obscure english indie band from the 90s called Thousand Yard Stare that I found a CD of and was heavily into right up into starting secondary school 4 years ago.

I was one of those kids in the early 90s that got sucked into the grunge thing. Along with Neil Young and Hendrix, all that Seattle stuff was what prompted me to pick up a guitar.

The Who playing My Generation and trashing their gear at the Monterey pop festival, and Jimi Hendrix on the same bill setting fire to his stratocaster and smashing the fuck out of it.

besides the intro, that video contains a lot of Dino Jr songs. I think this song/skating/editing combination really seals the deal for me

I only listened to cassettes and my family TV only seemed to work on PBS so there was no visual aspect to music. I used to check records out of the library and dub them. I suppose it was BOC Spectres.

The Ramones, Green Day, Rancid, and a Boston band called the Explosion.

Take a guess what my first band sounded like...

it was my genetic destiny to be a guitarist, and I always liked guitar. Brian May made me want to actually give it a try. I wanted to make those sounds. that is when I also learned about mutitracking guitars and studio wizardry. Robert Fripp made me want to take it seriously.

Same. I remember discovering them from the Tony Hawk Underground 2 soundtrack (which was fantastic). I think the song was "Here I Stand".

same.

to be fair, i think the tony hawks series had some of the best soundtracks ever. i remember a few years ago when me and some friends were having a few drinks, we had a heated discussion on what tony hawks games had the best soundtrack. god damn what that an argument for the ages.

Haha :D I can't really comment as THUG2 is the only Tony Hawk game I really played, but the soundtrack WAS amazing. I was just doing some paperwork (at work) and found a playlist for THUG2 as I was thinking about it. Still has some great stuff that I love.

I had some fun playing THUG2. Some of that soundtrack made me want to kill people, though. "Sonic reducer" = STOOOOOPID and whoever sang "I am the ambassador of kick your assador" should be publicly beheaded for writing such a stupid lyric.

I never quite managed to finish the skatopia level, though.
This is an excellent rectangle
