I'm every bit in the same boat as shadowplay as far as ethics is concerned, but I've played more than a handful of chinese made instruments that kicked ass and could easily be passed off as something made here. I've also played my fair share of US made instruments that may have been really solid, but sounded absolutely lifeless and had QC issues that were stupid for how easy it would be to see and fix them.

China is steadily creeping up in quality, and it's only a matter of time before they surpass first world countries because we have no respect for manufacturing anymore; and eventually they're going to demand higher wages and better working conditions too.

But that's a wee bit off topic (well, anything is considering how dead this thread is) and soap-box-y...

My point is that country of origin can only tell you so much, and it can't determine whether or not an instrument is going to be crap; and, above all, it's the player that really makes the instrument sound good or bad:

Fact is those working conditions aren't great but it's a job. In the United States and in the U.K. people work under those same conditions. Have you been to China? I have I worked all over Asia in the Financial industry. People worked in many different kinds of jobs, just like everywhere else. They were happy to be working and they are very proud of their country and it's products.

You want to see really harsh conditions go to Africa or India. Those people live in abject despair, because their are no jobs. The jobs that are on offer are prized.

At any rate you've gone off topic and you've didn't have anything useful to add. If you're so passionate about work conditions and copyright infringement why don't you start up a topic about that in your own thread so it can be discussed there?

I re-read it too, but rather than squirming about there being a perfectly reasonable discussion of ethics going on, I found myself wondering how much, if anything, has changed in China in light of the burgeoning middle class and increasing westernisation there.
