my "60s" SG special project - phase 3, help needed

Post by mynameisjonas » Thu Jan 24, 2008 8:12 am

ok, this is pretty far from happening right now (although i have started bidding on parts), but it's all i can think about these days so i thought i'd share my plans...
the idea is to get a faded SG special, or just the neck+body, and turn it into something like this:
Image
...except it will have round button tuners, no binding on the neck, parchment guard and maybe a lyre vibrola. and if i manage to find one of those 3 pickup specials cheap there will be only two knobs. the pickups will be curtis novak MM-90s. if i manage to gather all the parts before summer it will start out brown and then get a pelham blue finish when the climate permits it.

I love the Pelham Blue with a big white pickguard combo.  And the only thing I never liked about the original Melody Makers was the skinny headstock, but you won't have that problem.

Reminds me of my SG project, but then you knew that.

Super cool  :?

Are you going to paint the neck and headstock or no? I'd be torn.
Bigger in sum than parts.

the neck will be natural/brown, just like a melody maker :)

memories , that was my first good guitar. I had a SG style Melody Maker.
The tremlo was crap on these guitars, but i was 17 then and didn't know anything.
baggage handler did the guitar in. >:( I got it back in 4 pieces , lucky it was in a hardshell case.

So if you're planning to refinish it, please put a wrap around bridge..

i am thinking about doing that, but if i do, i'm gonna have two large visible dowels on the front of the guitar until it gets refinished. i guess i could live with that though.

Make mahogany plugs:

About $20, click the pic.
Works extremely well, and if you get a close-enough looking piece of Mahog, you could do a natural finish and few would notice.

Great!  The body is ready for grain filler and paint, I just have to get some money aside for the paint itself.  Oh, and I found a guy on eBay with a full-scale .pdf of a big SG pickguard that I might use to make my pickguard template.  It's just a scan of an actual guard, but it might work.  Let me know if you want a copy.

oh and another thing, the last couple of days i've been watching a lot of clips of the who on youtube... i'd love to just put some regular p90s in it and leave it brown... of course i could do both and just switch pickguard+pups back and forth. but the parchment melody maker outfit would look better on pelham blue, and the black townshend outfit would look better on brown... :-\
