Re: Which coily cable?
my vox coilies are really good for a few years---
the fender one or two i have got a little crackly-- but it's no big deal

I'm glad there are a lot of guitar players pursuing technique as diligently as they possibly can, it leaves this whole other area open to people like me.

Re: Which coily cable?
I have a coily cable from Radio Shack too. I think I bought it in probably '98 or so and it has been used pretty consistently in one way or another since then and still works perfectly. I have a couple Bullet cables too. I have a white one I bought about 6 years ago and a newer pink one. The only bad thing I have to say about them is that the heavy, reinforcing sleeve that they run at the last few inches up to the plugs tends to slip over time. I just tape them in place and don't worry about it. Other than that, I have had zero issues with mine. An added bonus is that the heavy ass cables tend to balance out an SG a bit better too (a Bigsby also helps ). There are so many good coily cables on the market now that you probably couldn't go wrong with any of them.sexwithdolphins wrote:bought a coil cable at radio shack for dirt cheap... connects my pedals to the input of my head. well. it hasn't failed me yet.

I'm pretty happy with my vox cable. I have the one with the clear jacket that looks like a lamp cord.

Necro-thread ressurection!
What's the current opinion as to the best coily on the market today in 2022 (as opposed to 2011 )? My Vox ones have caput, and always darkened the signal a little too much for my liking. I know they all roll off some highs but I definitely lose more through the Vox ones than the same amount of the straight Mogami I use outside of the house.
Hardwearing and low capacitance is the order of the day

My Vox one went bad in couple of months of light use. I might still have the mesh pouch it came in. I haven't owned any coily cables since (in 10 or so years), but I'd love to get a nice one.

Re: Which coily cable?
Yeah, I've had a few Vox ones and they've always gone bad on me pretty quickly. I've got a pair or 'Kirlin' 18g cables on order which I will reserve judgement on as they were only £22 each (on sale from £28). I know Justin/I love sharin foo on here had some and rated them for quality so we shall see.
Divine Noise seem to lead the pack if the internet is anything to go by, but they're $90 each and I'm waiting on an email back from them as to how brutal the shipping to the UK might be.

Interesting that folk have had issues with the Fender coily cables. I've been using one of the tweed ones extensively for about 5 years now and it's never skipped a beat. The coils are still good and tight, the only thing is the tweed covering has gone quite dark due to multiple stouts being spilt on it.

Re: Which coily cable?
I've never had any luck with any Fender cables, straight or curly. I used to go through their 'Professional' cables in about 3 months of gigging* - so much so that my local store (Andertons ) stopped allowing me the free warranty exchanges on them. I gig with Mogami Gold cables these days and still, after 5 years, haven't needed to break-open the backup one I carry everywhere. They're seemingly indestructible.
*I'm not that rough with gear either, and know the correct way to pack a cable. They're just junk.

Re: Which coily cable?
it stretches out to "long enough" i'd say. i run it between guitar and pedals and rarely have found it too short for walking round a room or stage. stretching is the point of coilies!

You’ve answered my question. Ever since seeing Hot Rod Circuit play with their vintage guitars & amps, leather jackets and coiled leads back in the 00s, I thought coiled leads were a hipster fashion thing.MechaBulletBill wrote: ↑Sun Jul 24, 2022 6:17 amit stretches out to "long enough" i'd say. i run it between guitar and pedals and rarely have found it too short for walking round a room or stage. stretching is the point of coilies!
Not gonna lie, pretty sure all my desires go back to wanting to look like them on stage that night.
I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

Re: Which coily cable?
Makes sense. The Van Damme is actually higher capacitance than the Vox cables though (I just measured mine and it's 84pf/m and the Vox is apparently 90pf/m. Divine is also around the same. I guess I'll just have to maybe opt for a shorter one.MechaBulletBill wrote: ↑Sun Jul 24, 2022 6:17 amit stretches out to "long enough" i'd say. i run it between guitar and pedals and rarely have found it too short for walking round a room or stage. stretching is the point of coilies!

that doesn't sound like a difference you'd necessarily notice, especially live

These are exclusively for home use. And yeah, I agree it's such a small difference it'll likely make no difference at all.MechaBulletBill wrote: ↑Sun Jul 24, 2022 9:12 amthat doesn't sound like a difference you'd necessarily notice, especially live
