Which coily cable?

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

i would say it bounces back enough given that it isn't tight enough to resist your movement when stretching it out. but obviously, it all depends on how much you stretch it out when using it i guess?

Today the Bullet cables arrived. Both read around 1200uF capacitance total each. So, so far, we have:

Vox Coily: 778uF (25uF/ft)
Bullet Coily: 1180uF (39uF/ft)

Audibly, there is very little in it, but I can definitely hear the difference. The Bullet feels a much higher quality cable however and would likely outlast the shitty Vox ones. Both benefit from sticking a Boss pedal off at the end of the pedalboard to make use of the buffer.

The Kirlin cables should arrive Friday then I can do the full comparison.

The designacable coilys arrived this morning. I must say they provide a great service, they called me on Thursday morning to double check all the specs I'd requested before starting them. I'd ordered one 90/straight for my bandmate and a 90/90 for myself and so they wanted to check I'd input the choices correctly. Super friendly guy I spoke to.
The cables are what you'd expect of a Van Damme, and well... They work ;D
Similar length to my other coilys, and pull out and return to shape nicely. I'm no cable expert, unless we're talking SWA, and so I'm not sure how well they'll hold their shape in the future. They feel like with a good tug they might lose their plasticity and be permanently deformed, but only time will tell I guess.
A good test will be with my bandmate actually. He's the kind of guy to throw everything in a tote bag and pull on cables to detangle them, whereas I'm the opposite and obsess over taking care of my things so we'll be able to tell how just how hardy these things are.

Got mine today too!

Never had a coily cable before, but thought I'd give it a try. Went for a purple to match my Centura :D

I got back from hospital yesterday to another parcel with the Kirlin cables in:

Vox Coily: 778uF (25uF/ft)
Bullet Coily: 1180uF (39uF/ft)
Kirlin Coily: 1262uF (42uF/ft)

Can one of you fine gentleman pop a multimeter onto one of the designacable Van Damme ones and let me know the final capacitance in the list?

What’s the difference between uf & pf, like this site talks about?

Anyone up for a Stratocaster tuned lead? Each to their own I guess, how far you’ll go to get your “perfect” tone.

I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion?

What that is is my brain being fried and me muddling up my uF's & pF's, let me correct myself:

Vox Coily: 778pF (25pF/ft)
Bullet Coily: 1180pF (39pF/ft)
Kirlin Coily: 1262pF (42pF/ft)

Got my meter out to get some values for you, but it doesn't read down in to the pf unfortunately. Tomorrow I'll see what my meter at work reads down to and hopefully be able to get some values for you.
Sorry about the hospital trip, hope all is well.

So, I'm mostly back in the land of the living now and bored of staring into the walls so I did some proper tests with the cables I got.

All were too dark for my usual home setup...way too much top-end loss for me. I'm more Gang Of Four/Wire than Clapton/Hendrix so smooth and warm sounds can GTFO. So I cut one of the Bullets in half, de-coiled 9" or so with some boiling water and put a new Neutrik on the end. Capacitance now halved it sounds WAY better - still a subtle loss but not enough that my ruined eardrums finds objectionable.

The Kirlin, which I expected to be the best of the bunch thanks to its enormous 18g wire, was actually the darkest and grittiest. However, it sounds utterly perfect taming the little Cube 40...

And it's purple, the colour of our Lord And Saviour.

Nice, very nice.
My work meter is also too industrial to measure small capacitance values I'm afraid so can't get a good reading of the designacable coily.
I'm going to give mine a trip out to practice this evening so we'll see how it goes. I'm fortunate that I run through a Laney TI Boost always on so I use this to tweak the guitar EQ and accommodate for anything lacking

i thought any buffer between the guitar and amp would basically undo the effect of any capacitance in the cable?

I mostly use Divine Noise coiled cables. I have a curly one, and a 50/50 (half straight half coiled). Both are excellent - I highly recommend them.

I tried to get one of those but they never bothered replying to my email about UK shipping :-/

Anyone else with one of the designacable ones got a multimeter that can measure capacitance before I order one up?
