Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Custom Shop

I was sort of suprised at it being a little rough around the edges and it had a definite second tier feeling to it.

I’ve played a Cassidy and also found that it had subpar fit and finish. Lots of rattling. The Starfires look awsome, one would go great with my Hagstrom Viking bass.

The Casady had challenging ergonomics due to its very large body and I found rather dull sounding. I've seen folks compare its sound to a Precision and I think that's pretty nuts. I think I finally hit the end of the road with any bass from the Gibson part of the world due to the JC experience. The Starfire has a more compact body, more clarity and so far I haven't found any penalty to it being short-scale.

That T-bird also avoids the dreaded three point bridge! It's not for me but those basses seem well regarded.

I forgot about that bridge! I took that off my Gibson T-bird immediately. What a piece of shit. The saddles aren't connected to anything- they'll just fall out. What kind of lazy fucking engineering does it take to make a thing like that.

The Jack Casady bass also had the three pointer and apparently had a reputation for pulling out of the body in addition to its general crap design. It reminds me of how many esoteric bridge designs you see in basses these days that can't seem to accept that Fender pretty much nailed it with the bent chrome plate decades ago.

I played the Explorer the other night at a local store. I’ll do confess that I was going in to look at the Firebird V, but since they didn’t have any in stock, I gave the Explorer and audition to see what the quality was like. I’m not an Explorer guy, but this was a nice guitar. It was light, resonant, and the neck shape was pretty much perfect for me. It had a satin finish, which is not my favorite but that’s personal preference. The only other guitar I picked up in that room that I liked more (and I played a lot of real Gibson Les Pauls) was a current production LP Special. Go figure.
