Surely you have a better word in your vocabulary than this?
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

also, Johnny, do you think the guy might do the number if you have the stamp ready and do the prep work? Might overcome his reluctance to take it on.

He's not reluctant to do it, just swamped for the foreseeable. The stamping of the number is the simplest part. I don't doubt it's overall a pretty simple task - especially as it's a small area, flat surface, basic prep/paint/stamp/clear order - but Yannis/Zhivago makes a good point about the high-end Gibson nerds being fussy about who's worked on things.
It's helpful a lot of the time, but other times you can accidentally look like a total aunt

First one is back, Joseph Kaye:
I'm guessing he typed shellac by mistake as I don't think they used any in the process of these in the 50s, but I could be wrong. Very different vibe from Yuuki who, back in Feb before he suggested I do it, was saying how uncomplicated the process isHello Johnny
Yes this is something I’d do. It’s going to take time.
I’d hand brush the shellac in and level it, let it shrink and build it up until it settles, then re ink the stamp.
I’ve worked on similar 50’s customs before tho this has a lot of lacquer missing so it would be worth seeing in hand,
Working out a price isn’t easy & it’ll take a least a month to do in stages, before the lacquer matches.
Best wishes
Joseph

They probably all have their own techniques of getting to the same place, the vintage Gibson crowd is similar to the vintage Martin crowd when it comes to repair work.
It is crucial the right people work on these old guitars, I learned that the hard way with my Martin.
Anyways, let us know how it goes

Okay, so no figures from anyone yet but I have sent messages out to LA Guitars in London, Andy Warnock in Kent and Ian Allerton at Guitar Works, London. LA Guitars I need to call, Ian Allerton I'm currently in talks with. He sent examples of his work and they look great (pics below) but sounds like it'll be quite expensive - no ballpark yet.zhivago wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 12:25 amThey probably all have their own techniques of getting to the same place, the vintage Gibson crowd is similar to the vintage Martin crowd when it comes to repair work.

Andy has refretted 3 of my guitars, and done fret work, and nut work on many others.
Here’s some pics of my Tele Deluxe he refretted and made a new bone nut for.

Playing devil's advocate (because you know I like you mate!) If the serial number is something that can be done by anyone....does it really hold the weight to a collector?
I have no idea about Gibsons, so not qualified at all to comment really, just seems a tad odd that it doesn't have to go back to Gibson or something for it to be official.

It's more about how it looks to potential buyers should I choose to sell it at some point. It's better to have a restored 2x3" area with the serial reinstated than a glaring scratch-off that just makes everything think it's stolen all the timewelshywelsh wrote: ↑Tue May 07, 2024 9:44 amPlaying devil's advocate (because you know I like you mate!)
