Acoustic bridge pins don't fit.

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Acoustic bridge pins don't fit.

Post by Zork » Sun Oct 15, 2023 6:08 am

I had to get new bridge pins for one of my acoustic guitars. I recieved a set of bone pins from Thomann a few days ago but they don't fit in the bridge. The diameter is too big. Now I'm not sure what to do: Drill out the bridge, put the pins in my drilling machine and sand them down (like in a lathe) or just send them back?

Acoustic bridge pins are tapered, you will need a tapered reamer to accurately fit them.
They should be fit individually and then kept in order , not just installed in any hole.

Another tool to add to the collection and another skill learned, you can do it.

I wouldn't do anything to your bridge. Instead you should just find the correct sized pins.

A stupid question but did the guitar have pins when you bought it? If so just measure the diameter of the pins just below the head, maybe the length too, and search for the correct pins using your measurements.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

Yeah, leave that bridge alone. There are two mostly standardized reamer sizes for bridge pins. Gibson and Martin. Everyone else just picks a side (although I'm pretty 90% of everyone goes with Martin).

Bone "works" really nicely. That is it responds well to being filed, sanded etc. Aside from just ordering different pins, I'd just widdle these down slowly and carefully- trying to be as even as possible.
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.
