As an SG fan, I have to say I’m glad you kept it. I’ve never seen a bolt on EPI SG. Pretty neat.
All that said, I’ve been contemplating selling my Gibson SG Standard, because it’s got that slim 60s taper neck, which I do like the feel of, but you got to be so chill and careful not to send it out of tune when standing up playing it. You get vibrato just from moving around even semi-vigorously.
It’s been something I have been struggling with and coping with for ten years now, and it’s such a beautiful guitar, but yeah.. it might go on the block soon to be replaced by something a little more stable (hopefully another SG with a thicker neck profile).

Duesenberg does a half split post tuners that are pretty cool too. Available in many form factors. The Mosrite tuners can be hard to find so if you want split; these are a cool alternative. Not your typical vintage tuner though.
You can string them regular, and as a split post. Z-tuners I believe they’re called.

Super Grimy?
Seriously Gross?
Anyway, it’s much improved now.
I would stay on the cheap side with tuners in keeping with its budget nature.
If the pickup sounds fine I wouldn’t be in hurry to replace it.
My brother in law had the bolt-on LP version of the this with a humbucker for a while. THAT pickup was pretty meh, but other than the tuners it was otherwise a much better guitar than I expected.
If you’re a once in a blue moon string breaker it seems like a good live backup guitar.

This is my main issue with SGs, and why I've had so many and moved them all on. This seems better for it so far. I haven't tried an old long tenon Jr though so that could be good too. Expensive roll of the dice these day's though.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 7:22 pmbut you got to be so chill and careful not to send it out of tune when standing up playing it. No kidding. An SG Standard in Canada nowadays is like 2400 bucks or more, whereas ten years ago I paid 1400 for my 2013, which is basically a 61 reissue (which are near 3K now).
Silliness.

Haha, I can see your soft spot for that one, Johnny - as it already has the correct and position of pickup(s)…
I‘m not a big SG fan - but I like those with that „Junior“(?) pickguard (and the white 3xPU one with the Vibrola).
For tuners… I have those: Kluson Mosrite ones on my Eastwood Sidejack and like them very much!
As you‘re already in the UK - make use of Armstrong music‘s (formerly WD UK) lasting Kluson stock (as they won‘t get any new ones any more - which was part of the reason for their split) - no affiliation - but a happy customer - as they also have/had the Revolution and Supreme tuners that I love to put on my F-style projects.

I've got a Classic with the big thick neck and even then, I feel like you almost don't need a wang bar on the guitar--if you need a subtle bend just pull on the neck!JSett wrote: ↑Mon Oct 09, 2023 9:56 pmThis is my main issue with SGs, and why I've had so many and moved them all on. Can I just say, your love affair with your SG is like a "thing" in my mind.
It's like you spend your life thinking you'll prefer one type of thing, then you go and plop a wad of cash for its total opposite an boom, you love it so much that it becomes your main squeeze.
As a fellow fender enthusiast, it's good knowing Gibson is there, keeping it tight as it were. Making what are really nice guitars. As fender keeps jacking the price up, it's increasingly tempting just to pickup a bound mahogany machine. I've done it now and I'm not unhappy about it.
Incidentally, about a year ago I was showing this site to a girl I was kinda hoping would... well anyway, I'm just scrolling around a random thread when she goes, "oh, I can tell these are your people. Look at that guy. I thought that he was you at first." She was referring to your avatar.
The girl is gone but OSG persists.
Anyway. Has J turned this SG into a ski pole yet?
If it wasn't for disappointment, I wouldn't have any appointments.

I’ve used these Grover split-post tuners on Gibsons, and they are awesome:

Rip the frets out of it entirely and use it like the Sonic Youth Drifter guitar
