NGD: A milestone bday gift to myself

Post by npfrs » Fri Sep 01, 2023 2:52 pm

I played this guitar awhile ago and could not get it out of my mind. I'm currently in the stage where I'm selling off many of my cheaper project guitars (the Epiphones and Squiers with upgraded pickups) and replacing them with just generally nicer guitars overall. With that said, there will be a couple NGDs in the coming weeks but this is the first...

Every good NGD should start with a case!

Image

I, uh, don't have any that have this on them though...

Image

Well, well, well, if it isn't a midlfe crisis treat!

Image

Well, thanks for checking out my post, it's been fu...

Image

Ok, ok, who am I to say no?

Image

Again, thank-yo...

Image

Ok, fiiiine...

Image

Thankfully, I think I had the perfect strap nearby as well!

Image

Ok, for real, going to go continue playing it now.

I am still kicking myself for not getting a (cardinal) red Firebird when it was still (relatively) affordable.

This is so good! :? Congrats!

Congratulations! Looks beautiful. I too gave myself a midlife crisis guitar, that '65 Jaguar. $100 for every birthday (turned 50). I highly doubt there will be any more vintage guitars in my life because I'm aiming at retirement in nine years so I have to save save.

But I kind of want a Firebird or Explorer and a V, this thing looks pretty awesome.

'22, less than a year old according to the inspection sheet.

I thought cardinal red would be my preference but seeing this ember red in person and palying it was enough to shake that notion, haha. As for affordable... only because I'm no longer a fulltime musician as well as my age, heh.

It is! I didn't go out specifically seeking a Murphy Lab but I played this guitar for several weeks before finally committing. I tried a bunch of other models (mostly higher-end Rickenbackers) but just kept coming back to this.

It's funny, this is my second Gibson and my first was actually my first/main electric I found in a small hole-in-the-wall shop with the wrong price tag on it many, many years ago... '59 ES-125:

I took this guitar all over the world. The 'Bird likely won't see even a sliver of the miles the 125 has but it shall be played and love just as much, for sure!

Always wanted one, is it an relic serie ?
I see the headstock and body finish has take the way to crackle in a nice aged look.

Lovely Firebird! Interested to hear how you like the Vibrola. I put a B5 on my firebird and like it, but it is not as aesthetically pleasing as the Long Vibrola.

And just a suggestion for the strap. Even when Firebirds don’t have neck dive, they still like to hang almost perfectly horizontal, which can be a little uncomfortable. Using a wide leather, or swede strap can help them hang in a more comfortable position. Anything that has a grabby material as backing really. My bird has a 4 inch leather strap, that has made all the difference.
