For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

yeah I believe woods make a difference only because i've built like a hundred partscasters over the last 30 years. There's data to support both sides so in closing, who cares. A good guitar is a good guitar. My belief is that if a guitar sounds great acoustically, you can make changes to make the plugged in tone match it. But anyway, back to Rickenbackers...

I spent some time with the 620 and I'm enjoying it. I believe it is from 2018. I like the pickups but here's what I noticed... you have to dig in to get the sound to brighten up, to jangle. The harder I played it, the brighter it got. If you don't play hard, I can see a compressor and EQ being useful. Maybe the toasters aren't as sensitive?

I use heavy strings 12-54 on Fenders, 13-56 on 24 3/4" scale guitars and we tune down to Eb. But yeah, borrowing this guitar sealed the deal, I need a Rickenbacker.

The only thing I don't like about the 620 is the tailpiece is too close to the bridge making it impossible to intonate it. I can't get the wrench in there, especially to reach the treble strings. Other than that, it's great. It's so small but rings out loudly acoustic.

Adjusting the truss rod was easier than I thought and small changes make a difference. Just 1/4 turn got me to where i needed on both sides.

No shielding on the pickguard is odd but whatever, it's still quieter than a Mosrite.

Oh yeah, I bash the strings on my guitars pretty hard and I agree it gets sharper and brighter the more you go for it. I was surprised how noticeably more mellow it was than my Jazzmasters...the bassist in my band always points out if my amp is set too bright (which is often with my hearing loss) and he actually told me to turn the treble up for once!

I'm interested to see what the Ric HB1 pickup does for the sound.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

Playing that album while reading this thread is dangerous, now I'm looking at Rics on reverb :fp:

I had a years-long Ric-spiral of listening to the Church (/ Marty Willson-Piper) and REM, shopping for more Rics, then listening to more Church records, going Ric shopping, listening to Ride and Slowdive and jangle stuff, repeat repeat repeat &c. I finally broke the cycle when one of the braces on my 1982 330 fell out (!) and it ended up at the shop (for way too long), and I had to switch to my Jaguar for upcoming shows (and haven't looked back. much). But: whew, it got kinda sketchy there for a while.

Speaking of the Church, so odd to see them making the rounds again. It's not the same band at all but now they're Jazzmaster-heavy. I miss the Strat & Rick combo.
