BDNGD - Belated double new guitar day. Melody maker and 70's Flying Vs!
I've been trading a lot of guitars this past couple of years, mostly for fun and curiosity's sake. Having the "good problem" of owning too many guitars to begin with, my approach has pretty much been, "if I'm remotely interested in seeing how this guitar plays and the trade value is good, I'll give it a shot." For some reason, my local market is flush with Gibsons, so they've figured prominently in my trades, and it's helped me get over some old anti-Gibson biases.
I've learned how much I like ES-335s (even though the one I picked up wasn't a keeper), I've learned that even "weight relieved" Les Pauls weigh way too fucking much to bother with, I've learned that and I found out that the Flying V does most of what I could ask of a Gibson, but with less weight and better ergonomics than most other models I've tried.
So, I don't bother with NGD posts unless it's something I really like/decide to keep. After taking roughly a year to get to know them, I'm finally ready to declare them "my" guitars rather than further trade fodder.
Here are the hints. Same manufacturer, same country of origin, similar shape but not identical, different woods and hardware, and two entirely different price brackets. Similar style pickups, but one has more than the other. No offset waist on either. Both will require some degree of hardware and/or pickup modification to get the most out of them, but are still plenty fun in their current stock forms.

Gibson Explorer.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I'd 100% have accepted any reasonable trade offers involving Firebirds, but none have come my way locally.

Hah, no worries. But all these guesses so far have been in the right spirit.Bradley-Jazz wrote: ↑Sat Oct 01, 2022 11:08 amGibson Firebird?

I'll give another hint - I'm falling into my old trap of "too many guitars of one type," though all have decently significant differences in specs. That's part of the reason I took so long to decide to keep these. I kept trying to choose between them until I finally decided that I didn't want to part with any of them.

'58 style flying V, even if IIRC you didn't like them as much ? Or just a standard V.

Gibson ES-339?
I don't know. You seem to be saying it's another V, but that would seem a little odd. You wouldn't buy a Les Paul. You have an SG and a V. You had a Firebird and ES-335 and sold those...
You love Gibson guitars, is what I'm realizing. I wonder if you have more than Fenders at this point.
