The production on Nevermind is incredible. Butch Vig made a DS-1 work, imo.
I'm not a fan of the sound of Nevermind. Or any of Butch Vigs work really...he has a style to his work that does very little for me. But different strokes for different folks etc.

You can make almost anything work with a studio as well-equipped as the one they recorded at. Plus, the guitar tones were layered with DS1, Rat & Big Muff depending on what song from what I've read.

Anyway... I know some people on OSG are quite sensitive about the shape of the current Mustang control plate, and how it doesn't closely follow the edge of the body. So...
In all honesty, that's no uglier than the actual Jagstang.

The sound of Nevermind is much more Andy Wallace's work (the mixer) than Butch Vig's (which was more about structuring songs parts and arrangements, and recording).

I too am not fond of the album sound, neither did Kurt AFAIK (he loved Vig's mix, though). Those songs deserved a finish closer to In Utero than to mainstream rock.

I was in agreement until he said Kurt was a great singer and songwriter :fp:

Nah, you're wrong man. As much as I like to rag on Cobain he definitely wrote some solid and catchy tunes and had a great punk/angry singing voice with a lot of character, I'll always give him that.

Yeah, the mix is very pop metal. The funny thing about that to me is it’s the genre Nirvana supposedly killed.

That’s what made it so successful though. There was some familiarity sonically for people not used to listening to more raw rock music.

Yep. Maybe it wouldn't have been such a big hit (although I think it would still have been hugely popular) with the sound of In Utero. But a slightly less bright mix would have been very welcome xD

A much better candidate for an alternate mix re-release than Revolver IMO.

Yes, he wrote great songs. And yes, the Jagstang is an ugly guitar... Not as ugly as a Toronado though..

But yeah there’s some real weird shit on there that makes you wonder if anyone involved actually plays guitar.

Imagine going to all this trouble and then just dropping bog standard Strat guts into the thing. I mean… look at that jack placement!
