Danelectro Skate Key Tuners

Post by JSett » Sat Aug 13, 2022 1:29 pm

Has anyone here had dealings with the absolute woe that is the old Dano 'Skate Key' tuners?

These are not good tuners. I know beforehand they used some open gear ones that may have been better, or worse, but either way these are not making my life fun.

So, I'm looking for some kind of replacement. The pegs are 35mm / 1⅜" apart. The units have three screws each but I'm not opposed to drilling for more. Any suggestions? Preferably something that'll not look out of place and not crazy money. I'm fine with nickel, chrome, butterbean, etc.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?

How about 3x3 tuners? I bought Gretsch Electromatic 3x3 tuners (they look like the normal vintage Kluson tuners), I think that I bought them for 25$ a couple years ago. They're great tuners for the money. It'll leave impressions in the back from the old set but that's no big deal on an old beat up Dano.

Yeah, some kind of 3x3 would be needed, or 3 on a plate.

The distance post to post looks to be right.
Knowing you’re a butterbean fan these seem about right:
https://www.stewmac.com/parts-and-hard ... es-tuners/

They exist in with pretty much all your standard Kluson type peg headshapes. I have the vintage tulip style gold Version on my late 50s Supro.

EDIT: they might be too long… protruding on the low/high e sides…

That would be a great occasion to test out the rarely seen kluson Split-Post 3x3 tuners.

I could likely make these work...the posts on the skate key ones are all the same height already

Just look for Kluson Mosrite tuners, such as these (random ebay auction, you'd have to check if the dimensions work out though)

Ahhhh, I see. I was hunting for on-a-plate types. Didn't think to look for individual ones
