OLY American Professional Telecaster
I got this beautiful guitar today. Used but in really good condition overall.

But this is why I bought it.

I bought a Warmoth pickguard so I wouldn't have to modify the stock one. It fit fine. I did have to plug the humbucker mounting holes and redrill for the new pickup ring. I also had to dremel a bit in the routing for the bridge humbucker opening to get the pickup to fit. I pulled the stock tone and volume and replaced it with a 250K volume pot and a TBX tone pot. It sounds great! I am still adjusting to the red/red, but I like the blue more than I remember. The bridge humbucker is pretty bassy. I wonder if I should change the volume pot to 1meg. The stock Tele Plus came with a 250k volume stock so that is where I started. I know many would say that I wrecked a beautiful guitar, but I didn't do the mods to resell it. I wanted my own tele plus without spending 2-3K in a color I liked best.

I dig it. Teles with humbuckers sound huge. I have a mind to make a Jeff Beck-style Tele-Gib one day.

Re: OLY American Professional Telecaster
I think a lot of good ceramic pickups get overlooked because of AlNiCo snobbery.
The best ceramic pickups have this odd ability to have a strong attack, excellent clarity, and higher inductance (if you like that), with out sounding muddy/middy and losing some sparkle in the treble. It's something almost never found in AlNiCo pickups where you often trade clarity for output and vice-versa, particularly for single coils. This seems consistent across several designs too, be it the G&L MFD pickups, the Joe Bardens in my Tele, or Super Distortions (albeit at the extreme end). Ceramic pickups have a lot going for them I think.

I am pretty consistent with what I like. I like ceramic humbuckers and typically ceramic single coils. I do like alnico 5's usually also. I prefer brighter sounds with a bridge pickup and a clear neck pickup that isn't too bassy/muddy.

Re: OLY American Professional Telecaster
I finally finished this one. I changed the 250k volume to a 1meg pot. I know the diagram shows 250k but it is just too muddy with that. Lace even recommends 500k or higher for their pickups so no idea what is up with the Telecaster Plus wiring diagram. I even have to have the TBX all bass cut to get the sound I like best. LOL

Now to just add the kill switch between the knobs and you will have gone FULL GREENWOOD.HNB wrote: ↑Wed Sep 07, 2022 8:47 amI finally finished this one. I changed the 250k volume to a 1meg pot. I have installed them before, but have had bad luck with the switches crapping out. LOL

This guitar looks entirely too glossy and mint to be an HNB project
