I also think it looks gross but I hate most of the whole relic aesthetic for the most part. I would also give cleaning a go. If the sweat got in, then maybe it can come out? You can't make it worse and even if it does, everyone on here will say it looks rad. :D (Not that I'm saying I have better taste, I like some stupid stuff too, like that jaguar several years back that had a crappy jaguar painted on it. I thought that was the bees knees).

I've spray painted several guitars and no electric ever sounded different afterwards that I could tell. I did spray paint an acoustic and that sounded a lot different afterwards, which makes sense because the top had more crap on top of it, so it didn't vibrate as much. The wood isn't vibrating all that much comparatively on a solid-body guitar and whether the pickups can even see that difference is a whole argument I'm sure.

The electrics I painted were not done with care. Most not even sanded first, just spray painted right over the existing poly finish. My guess is a quality refin wouldn't make that much of a difference. Certainly less than replacing the entire body. If it were me, I'd lean heavily towards keeping it daphne blue but poo brown would also look pretty awesome.

Not much, but gold/brass hardware and an orange shag strap would do it.

It’s a tough one.

One of my old faves has a messed up, dirtied finish like that - the result of 20+ years of use/abuse. For ages i wanted to get it resprayed and cleaned up, but over time my view gradually changed. Now, even though it still looks shit, the various discolourations, stains and scuffs remind me of all the good times i’ve had with that guitar. As a result, the urge to have it gentrified has completely gone.

So, be wary that a sentimental aspect may creep in over time! On the flipside, if it really bugs you, get it redone.

From the depths I bring thee, thread of what feels like an age ago (but only because time has no meaning since 2020)...

I actually sent my #1 off for a full refinish yesterday to Rexter. I know he'll do an amazing job but I am still a little nervous.

It's gonna be a long few months

Do keep us posted. This is still up for debate for me.

Well, technically this will be it's second refin, as I stripped the old CAR off over a decade ago and gave it a thinskin black nitro finish instead.

It should return back to me in a nice aged Firemist Silver w/matching headstock!

It is indeed! It's getting a full revamp... New pickups and electronics, new paint and a pearloid pickguard. It was looking pretty tired after a decade of heavy gigging (on top of my quick and dirty refin).

...that photo definitely hides a wealth of sins too. Chunks out the body, repair lines in the headstock where I snapped it, dents, melted nitro (from stickers) etc.

Yeah, funny thing is that I have been considering refinishing mine for some time now with a light metallic color like blue green or silver or something in between,of course with matching headstock :-* .
The neck from this particular model feels perfect in terms of shape and width. I would say it is a little bit fuller than another mij model I own.
Very interested in seeing how this one will turn out, subscribed!

Indeed the neck on these is the best profile I've ever felt on a Fender Japan offset. It's almost identical to my '64 Jaguar (just a touch wider at the nut) and a nice comfy rounded C shape. This is definitely my 'take it to the grave' guitar - in fact, it's the only one of my guitars noted in my will!

I empathize with OP's fear of showing the guitar and being told how good it looks, though.
I do too. It's fairly common where suggestions are given that completely ignore the original question.

And I agree in the opinion of not needong tort guards on everything too. There are some colors where tort is just wrong, most especially any blue and any green.

A number of people around here do, but I am definitely not one of them, haha.
