Squier Jaguar & Jazz Basses
I'm thinking of getting a Squier Jaguar or Jazz bass to supplement my Player PJ Mustang and I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations. Apart from the new Affinity Humbucker Jag, they seem to have quite a few variations on the Jazz but I can't tell a lot about them from the internet. Any first hand experiences out there at all?

I have one of the Squier Biffy Clyro guy Jazz Basses. I'm assuming it's just a Vintage Modified bass with a better finish. It feels nice to me and sounds like it should. I'm not a bass player and use it almost exclusively for recording.

Great - thank you! I'm just wondering about the overall quality. The contemporary Jazz bases look good but I don't quite know what to expect from them.

Re: Squier Jaguar & Jazz Basses
I've got a Jazz Bass from the first Classic Vibe series and it's a super solid instrument. Toured with it for almost 10 years, never had any trouble. I also have a Standard series Jazz Bass that had a horrible neck that was constantly bowing back and forwards. Replaced the neck with a Vintage Modified fretless neck and didn't have any complaints ever since. My VM Bass VI is a very nice and solid instrument, too. I don't know about the Affinity series personally, but the higher grade Squiers are usually quality instruments that'll bring you a long way with a good setup and a new nut. The old Classic Vibe series are the best you can get, though.

my main bass for years was a squier affinity jazz bass. it managed to survive every night without issue...... and i am hard on guitars/basses. it's not the classiest bass in the world BUT they feel great and sound really good. here's an old picture of me playing mine
offset guitars resident bass player.

Re: Squier Jaguar & Jazz Basses
In the end, I went for an LPB G&L Tribute Jazz with binding and blocks. In person, it looks more like IBM but it sounds and plays very well indeed. It might be early days, but I think it's better than the Player Mustang bass I've got in all respects. What it reminds me most of in terms of quality and value is a Gretsch Electromatic I own, which is no bad thing! First G&L and I'm really impressed.
