“Oh yeah, that made me want to be a guitarist...”

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

I never quite managed to finish the skatopia level, though.
So you never got to skate in the UFO or the Aztec ruins?!?

You should look it up if you don't have the game anymore. It's cool as hell. If you do have the game, I believe there's a level cheat code...

The Ramones, Green Day, Rancid, and a Boston band called the Explosion.

Take a guess what my first band sounded like...
fuck i remember the explosion. i had one of their albums years ago.
Same. I remember discovering them from the Tony Hawk Underground 2 soundtrack (which was fantastic). I think the song was "Here I Stand".
Here I am! I was in the music video when they shot it at the Axis bank in 2004. My brother tried to stage dive and almost got his lip ring ripped out of his face.

Their first four albums (well 3 EPs and one full length) are awesome. Black Tape is kinda shitty.

That's right! I only ever had Black Tape because of "Here I Am". I used to listen to more punk, but I've gotten to the point that I can't listen to punk on album anymore. It's fun to watch/listen to live, but album frequently loses some of that energy.

Re: skateboarding This fIREHOSE song in Tom Knox's part in Speed Freaks was one of the first times my ears really perked up hearing a guitar player and I thought "Maybe I could actually do that!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gHCIBvUuzY

It came out in 1989, and was of course followed by the US release of the aforementioned Stone Roses S/T debut. With that one I thought "There's no way in hell I could play like that that but I want to try."

Not long after I got into the Smiths, and it took an embarassingly long time for me to become aware of the concept of multitracking and that a lot of my favorite recordings had a shit ton of guitar tracks on them. But, the genius of Johnny Marr is even when you strip all the ornamental layers away the core idea (specifically the chord progression) is still pretty great on its own.

Two main memories stick out for me:

1. I was initially inspired to play guitar by watching my dad play, especially after seeing pics of him with his rock n roll band in the 1960s.

2. The most pivotal moment after that was hearing Deep Purple In Rock for the first time. From the crashing intro of Speed King, to its double tracked solo, i was intrigued and hooked. From that day, Ritchie Blackmore became (and still is) my number 1 guitar inspiration. I spent my teenage years next to the cassette player, rewinding time and time again, trying to learn every guitar part from every Deep Purple song! Years later i learnt what a douche Mr Blackmore is, but i still love his playing from the early days.

Cheers!
J.

WTAF is happening in that picture? I'm talking about Dave Gahan, there. Why is he wearing a leather jacket with jean shorts, white socks, and black shoes? What is going on with his crotch?

Martin Gore is tragic hairstyles personified.

Well, my earliest musical memory is listening to Eight Days a Week as a 3 or 4 year old and thinking that the music was pretty good, but they didn't know how to count.

Within a few years, I was grooving to Parasite and thinking this was the greatest thing ever.

LOL. I never noticed the crotch thing before. it does look strange but i'm sure there's a normal explanation haha.
Also Martin's haircut used to irk me when i was younger, but looking back now, he used to rock some cool looks somtimes.

I always thought "your hair is the wrong color, texture, and cut for Depeche Mode" about Martin Gore. They're such an aesthetic package that I just never saw any excuse for him not changing his hairstlye. Still don't. He looks like a pineapple.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwU5EhwwU0I

i remember my dad playing this song.
offset guitars resident bass player.
'Are you trying to seduce me Mrs Robinson? Or do you just want me to solder a couple of resistors into your Muff?'

one day as a toddler I saw a picture of roy orbison, sunglasses, big electric guitar when i was a kid and I was enraptured. I LOVED his music, according to my mom.

then when MTV became a big thing, apparently I lost my mind over elvis costello with his glasses and specifically his jazzmaster.

my parents took me to a u2 concert and I obsessed over the edge's explorer.

finally, saw a music video for sonic youth when I was 13 and that was it. 2 years of begging later, I got a strat and a big muff.

I didn't own a Jazzmaster for fifteen years and I'm mad I waited.
