Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
I guess I should add my new 2014 J045 to this thread:
It's waiting on bone bridge pins, a bone saddle that conforms directly to the fingerboard curve, and locking Grovers.
There was a thought that the J-35 might have been made obsolete:
But I was playing it last night, and it's just a wonderful guitar. It plays like a dream, and it sounds great. I'll probably just keep them both.

Love Gibson acoustics. Probably the best acoustics of any maker. But the difficulty of neck resets makes any discussion a non starter.

Mine's had two in her lifetime...one while I owned it and one in the past. There is nothing difficult about re-setting the neck. The process is the same as any other acoustic guitar with a dovetail joint.

My luthier said the glue is unusually strong, and the way it's joined results in finish damage.
It's kept me away from them.

I'd look for another luthier, personally, and experience the amazing sounds these guitars can put out

Thanks for posting that, Jake. What is the wood on your J-100? They used a lot of different ones, is that maple on that one?

Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
Also, I thought I should post this J-60 that I got a while back here as well:
I've talked about this one in the past, how it's basically Gibson attempting to make a Martin HD-28. Whatever it is, it's a wonderful guitar, loud, powerful, but capable of very clear, quiet passages. Great dynamic range, it sounds lively and full when fingerpicked. The sound is kind of three dimensional, if that makes sense.
Definitely worth a look if you don't feel like paying the Martin price, like I didn't, these are overlooked gems.

it does look like maple...but i don't remember.
If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

I'm jonesing for a slope shoulder 12 fret. I almost pulled the trigger on a Roy Smeck a couple weeks ago, but I asked for more pictures and it sold. I'll contribute if I find another one.

I've been really wanting to get my hands on a J100 or J200 lately.. but damn, they are expensive. I already have one $2k acoustic, it's sort of hard to justify another one!

Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
I guess I quit posting here, but I didn't quit buying Gibson acoustics. Here's my J-29, which is exactly the same as the J-35 above, but with rosewood back and sides instead of mahogany:
An L-00 12 fret also with rosewood back and sides:
A J-15, exactly the same as the J-45 Standard, but with walnut back and sides and a maple neck. I got this one for $800, and in those days, they were an incredible value on an incredible guitar:
And I did end up getting a J-100 Xtra, with bubinga back and sides:
And a good old L-00 Standard also:
When I realized I liked Gibson acoustics a lot, I really realized it. I was going crazy for a while.

Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
I use a pretty wide variety of tunings, so I find it easy to justify having a few guitars. My Dove tends to live in open C, the J-15 seems to like to live in some kind of DADGAD or DADEAD tuning, one of them I put in DADEAC# after reading an article about how our friend Chad from Kestrels tunes his, and so on. Oh, I put one in the Nick Drake Pink Moon tuning of CGCFCE.
In case you want some kind of justification, that's one I use. Clearly I need one guitar to be tuned to CGCGCE and another to be in CGCFCE, and so does everyone else.

Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
I have been almost exclusively using a non-standard tuning this year. Those Epiphone "Inspired-by-Gibson" models are pretty tempting, but a good chunk of the reviews I've been reading discuss how they're built a little heavy and sound somewhat muted compared to the real thing. Well, that and I haven't been able to find anyone near me who has them in stock. And I know I won't be happy until I have the real deal anyway...Larry Mal wrote: ↑Tue Nov 16, 2021 8:29 pmI use a pretty wide variety of tunings, so I find it easy to justify having a few guitars. Re: Gibson acoustics, let's see 'em!
If I was to get another Gibson (which i won't because I have no room and I can't be stuffed with all the rosewood paperwork hassle) if would be one of these (or the same year SJ) but with the adjustable saddle. There were a few made with the rounded shoulders and adjustable saddle set up before they went square shouldered.
this guitar is effectively a tarted up J45/50 ... but I like the look
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...
