Same for me, and I feel that way too... I have a Strat that I've had longer than any other instrument currently in my arsenal, and I
like it, but I don't
love it... I keep wanting to replace it with a Mustang, but when I think about selling it my sentimentality shelves the idea.
For me, this might sound silly, but I feel like the size of the body is too big... or maybe the shape of it doesn't feel right on me? One way or another the ergonomics of Strats have always just felt slightly
off for me.
Yeah I think that's a good summary, some guitars just don't quite work. I prefer the Mustang to the Strat especially tonally, but when I've had a few they just don't get played, I think because the Jag has the same kind of neck feel plus more tonal versatility so it's a bit redundant.
The only person who has made sense of the Strat layout/ergonomics, to me, is Jeff Beck. The volume control being so close to the bridge pickup and under the bar at certain angles, well, he basically made an entire style of playing out of it by being dextrous in a way most players can't, to combine pickup changes, volume swells and compound whammy bar bend/vibrato dips. A great example of a Strat at it's best; it just sort of disappears into him.

The Jag bass I have has a Jazz bass style neck. That’s one of the reasons why I selected it. I do like the sound of a Precision, and as Johnny mentioned, there’s a setting that gets that sound or something like it.
That's basically a perfect match then; Jag body ergonomics with Jazz bass neck. I used to love the Jazz bass in college because it's skinny for a bass, whereas my SG Standard was a bit more baseball bat, so going between them gave a really similar neck feel for easier transitions.
Personally the Precision is the bass version of a Strat for me - I can't ever seem to settle with one and get it to sound good, whereas other more talented players can work miracles with them. Doing octaves is just too much of a stretch, literally, on that width/thickness of neck.

Whoa, nice. I'd do unspeakable things for both the Tele and the Mustang Bass.
Sadly, I sold the Mustang Bass (for $200!) to a local shop in 2001, and they sold it on eBay -- no idea where it ended up. Maybe one of you has it!
I didn't miss it for a long time. The band I used it in broke up, and I was completely in love with the Jazz Bass. The Mustang was a great starter, but it's plonky baloney-tone just wasn't the sound I wanted 20 years ago.
Fast-forward to the pandemic. My old 90s band reformed, and nostalgia compelled me to seek out a Mustang Bass -- I
needed that plonky baloney-tone! Benny Yurco was kind enough to sell me the one he had been using with Grace Potter's band at the time.

LOVE this - is it the Squier Tele Precision from about 10 years ago?
Cabronita bass.
Modded, of course.

i have an 80s tokai P. the neck is a bit big for me really and i have flats on it so it's a "slow" instrument. sounds great though and not too heavy.

I sold my old JV-series Squier P-bass a few years after my old band split up, thinking I'd eventually pick up an Affinity or something later on to use for demos and stuff, but I haven't gotten around to it. It must be like 10 years ago now.
I need to pick one up soon though. I've been programming MIDI bass for my demos lately, and it takes a long time and sounds kinda crap.

The other advantage of real bass is it's a lot easier to lock into grooves with unusual timing/syncopation and putting accents in (something I always hate about programmed MIDI anything when I have to do it) is literally a case of playing a little hard with fingers/pick depending on what kind of song it is. Oh and no bass synth I've ever heard gets palm-muted electric bass guitar right, no idea why.

Last year I went from Fakenbacker to Squier VM Jag Bass (short scale) - and I really want to try learn how to slap. And I also want to learn some serious bass runs (instead of just doubling the guitar).
I have had a Squier short scale Jag bass (CAR) since I bought a new one in 2014. Fun guitar. Sold my normal scale P/J bass soon after.

I absolutely love playing bass; I think it’s my favorite instrument to play. I’ve posted about this bass before, but here’s my ‘66 Hofner Club Bass in all its hollow body glory.
I’ve played bass for over 25 years and many different ones have come and gone, but there’s something about this one that keeps giving me what I want — even with all its inherent quirks. I guess that’s just part of it’s charm.

We shall see...I tend do avoid buying things on a knee-jerk as it is a bad market to sell in...still researching stuff.
There was one bass that I had my sights on for a while, but it sold a couple of days ago.

At this time I have 3:
- 2014 Squier VM Bass vi refinished in IBM with an anodized silver guard (Which I use for chordal stuff and doublings more than a conventional bass)
- 2001 American Deluxe Jazz Bass (It's been mostly gathering stuff because of the following)
- 1971 Blue compstang bass,
rescued and saved by forumite will . I love this little low end beast to pieces. So inspiring.
